Hey help me out- I'm in the market for a new pair of boots and would like input from D.C. area folks as to the best shop and sales person. I think getting the correct fit
on one's boots is the single most critcal contributer to good skiing. I also think that there are too many people out there selling the stuff that don't know what they are
talking about as far as fit/comfort/flex etc. Thanks, Uppercase Dave

I recommend Ski Center at 49th & Mass. in NW DC. Trusting my memory the phone
# is, 202-966-4474. Ask for Brian Eardley or Brian Beaumont. When I go
for new boots, in a few weeks, I am going to make an appointment for a
quiet weekday afternoon. They specialize in high performance skiers and
racers. They have fitted both of my kids, one a college racer, the other just
a damn good skier. Once I get my boots right I keep them a long time.
Although I love them I have finally decided to retire my 1978 Garmonts (the
ones with the steel bands around the forefoot). They have easily 500 days on
them and I have worn out two sets of bladders.

I would like to hear opinions about bootfitters in the Denver/Boulder
area. I am especially interested in info and opinions about THE CUSTOM
FOOT which is a company run by two guys (one of whom is Lee Kinney) out
of two mountain equipment shops, one in Denver, the other in Boulder, the
Boulder Mountaineer. I have heard conflicting reports on these guys.

Also, does anyone have info or opinions on the COMPUFIT sizing system to
find boots that will fit?

Thanks.

I know that this place is not exactly in the Denver/Boulder area but
there is a great shop called The Boot Werks at the base of Peak 9 in
Breckenridge. I have a rather difficult foot to fit and they did a
wonderful job. When I first went in to see them they did not have a
boot that fit properly, they sent me to 2 other shops that they
reccommended. When I couldn't find a boot that fit properly without
being modified I went back to The Boot Werks and had them custom fit a
boot to my foot. They had to not only strech the liner but change the
shape of the shell. They did a great job and were willing to make
minor adjustments all week while I was there skiing.

I go back at the beginning of each ski season for any minor
adjustments I might need. They have always been very professional,
friendly, and very good.

I am not affiliated with them in any way. I am just a very, very
satisfied customer. I think it would be worth the drive to
Breckinridge from Boulder to have them do your boots.

Don't know anything about the companies that you mention, but I have had
great success with Boulder Ski Deals on Pearl Street. They have sales
people who really know what they're doing, and they do the boot fitting
for the CU ski team.

Good Luck

I went to the Custom Foot several times a few years ago. In my
opinion they were not very good. They attempted to stretch my
Lange "Pink Panthers" and they did a poor job. They also did a
VERY bad job replacing a buckle on the same boots. They had to
do it three times before it even stayed on and then it was loose.

I also used their compufit system. At first it listed about 30
boots that would fit my feet. They narrowed the search criteria
down and gave me a list of 5 boots that would fit best. I tried
on all 5 and none fit very well. I ended up asking for (and
getting) a refund on the compufit charge ($30 I think.)

The best place that I have found for custom fitting boots is
RightFit Sports in Breckenridge (and other ski resort towns.)
They guarantee everything, will work on your boots as much as
necessary to get a perfect fit, and they did a very good job.
(My feet are size 12, wide, with a high instep and I have never
had a pair of comfortable ski boots until I went to RightFit.)
