putting down tracks. just thought an alpine skiing group could use an
alpine skiing post, so here goes:
sun came out this pm after several straight days of freshies; but all is
not lost - it's supposed to start snowing again tomorrow for another
week or so. it's been cold, so the powder has been light and bountiful.
did some hiking yesterday and found entire slopes of untracked.
next round of dumpage is forecast as warmer - a heavy layer on top of
light may not bond well - dig your pits and be careful guys.

Unfortunately, last week was a bust. I was near the Poke-your-nose over
Xmas and despite the huge dump slightly to the south (Philly got 24
inches, the most since they started keeping records in the 1800s) the
coverage was a bit thin at the resorts and then it rained cats and dogs
for 36 hours. So no eastern skiing over XMas week for me.
Back here in the flatlands, I'm planning to ski a local molehill
tomorrow and the first before heading up north for the weekend.
So, yeah, I'm skiing. Or will be in about 12 hours.

Yep. Remember that it was only about a year ago that there was an
avalanche inbounds at Wisp in Maryland. Slides can happen in the most
incongruious places.

visit the upcoming Olympics. In the middle of the discussion, one

Mr. Alan Baker of Vancouver:
"Fair warning: if I ever see you, under any circumstances, I'm putting
you down on the ground, like the mad dog you are."
To be perfetly frank, I have many reasons to believe that Mr. Abraham
is nothing but a cowardly blowhard who is too much of a pussy to
follow up on any of his threats, but I would feel guilty if the event
suggested by Mr. Abraham were to come to pass and I had not said
anything to the authorities. I am addressing this to you because the
events could possibly take place in Canada, first because of the
connection to the Olympics, secondly because Mr. Baker lives in
Canada, and thirdly because Mr. Abraham frequently writes about his
trips to Canadian ski reports.

My sons got a free golfing day today at Barona Indian Reservation,
Casino, and Resort (free because my wife knows the hotel manager, not,
she tells me, becuase she is such a good customer at the bingo hall
and the blackjack tables). They came home early because it was
raining a little bit. I remeinded them that gold was invented in
Scotland, where it rains every GD day!!! and called them pussies.

Mine is going to include references to the blustering and the record
of evasion but also include wish to protect myself as well as position
myself with advanced warning should something occur. What would
perhaps be written off as a "drunk looney" by beat cops could well be

Oh yeah, Heavenly received a couple of inches of freshies overnight
for past several nights, so the snow really piled up, bumpy on the
groomed trails, and great tree skiing despite a few rocks (actually,
avoiding them is what makes this tree skiing fun), and the entire
North Bowl Woods are untracked!!! (Guess it is black-off days for the
locals, and/or none of the flatlanders knows how to tackle it.) No
hiking. :)

I will be sending it for the same reason the underwear bomber's father
reported him to the US authorities. I have observed what may or may
not be a threat against a Canadian citizen that may or may not be

Not so grasshopper. I know that he is afraid to come here to confront
me. But off of my home turf? I plan to be at the Olympics, and in my
opinion he has made himself clear what he wants to do. The most recent
example is the "dog" post to Alan. I have several similar ones
directed at myself. And IMO that should be enough to prohibit his
entry into the country. At worst, put his name on a list that can
easily be recognized. As you said, he's obviously mentally unstable.

discourage prospective martyrs from blowing themselves up. Being a heroic

Certainly, although the plural is probably zirconiae. The nice thing about CZ
is that it looks as good as a diamond and if you lose it or break it (the edges
get rounded or chipped after a while) you can get another one for under a buck
a carat.

Light crowds over MLK weekend? Guess again. That's one of the
busiest days of the year.
The skiing here hasn't been that great but it is snowing now so
hopefully it will be better by then. Last I heard, our snowpack is
only about 80% of normal. It's been a below average early season and
the backcountry has been as bad as I've ever seen it for this time of
year. They had a couple of slides in Blue Sky Basin yesterday and had
to close the lift.

Yup, I was skiing over the holidays. Just got back yesterday afternoon
from a week of skiing at Powder Creek Lodge... including a great New
Years Eve party and plenty of powder and sunshine.
Conditions were excellent. Very stable snowpack most of the week. Late
Thursday it warmed up to -5c and starting snowing again, giving us a
bit of an upside-down snowpack above the treeline but not in the
trees.
This is an incredible place. Fly in by helicopter to the lodge at 7100
feet in the middle of nowhere in the Purcells, ski tour for 7 days,
then fly out again at the end of the week. Spectacular!
