Which is the better brand of shaped skis: Salomon or Dynastar? I leased a pair
of Salomon shaped skis for my daughter. When I returned to the ski shop to pick
up the skis, they had substituted the Salomons with a pair of Dynastars. They
told me they accidently gave the Salomon's to someone else, but the Dynastars
were just as good. Is this true or are they giving me a line?

Without specifying exact models and such, who can say.

Even if you did specify exact models, people would have different ideas.

I think I would say the substitution is reasonable,
they are certainly skis in the same league by all means.

Of course you might question the ethics of such an unexpected switch.
They call it an accident, and such things do happen.

Personally I wouldn't loose a lot of sleep over it.

I ski on dynastars, and am now in the midst of a quandry
about whether to buy a new pair of either Dynastars or Salomons.

Dynastar is owned by Rossignol. The best freeride ski for the past 2 years
is the Dynastar 4x4 Powertrack as per the Daily Mail Ski and Snowboard mag.

Salomon have 45% of the UK market and have some excellent ski's in their
range.
Try this web site to look at the different manufacturers.

You need to check the models you were being offered.

The simple answer is, "Yes."

The more complicated answer is: From your description you rented a basic
rental ski (I assume this because otherwise you would be talking about
particular skis in the Saloman and Dynastar lines). Both these companies
will have a line dedicated to the mass market rental business. Not real
good skis but strong and basic. In that case they are almost certainly
very similar in quality and perfomance.
Thus the complicated answer is also, "Yes."

BTW, everything in a reasonable rental shop today will be "shaped."

You have no idea how hard it is these days to find an unshaped, narrow,
soft ski for powder. Something like the old Miller Softs. Hey guys -
anyone around Tahoe have an old Miller Soft they want to dump?

Try some Yostmark Classic Noodles (Yostmark Skis. Driggs Idaho). They
use to be made in the old Mileer molds and have a pretty similar feel.

What he said, Lloyd. IIRC, Clair Yost got started by buying the molds
from Miller. Old school fatties - if they're too fat look for some old
Tuas like the Montets or Excaliburs. They oughta give some porpoise to
yr life.

Man Truckee... you sure do bring back some fond memories..... I have a
pair of Miller Softs in my collection. I'm not quite sure I'm ready to
part with them though. I do have a pair of RD Heli-Skis (pair no:23 to
be exact) that might work for you... they have never been drilled & were
state-of-the- art during the winter of '85-'86. Let me
know......Peace,ZORR44

YRC :) I have an old pair of Noodles, still viable, still soft, with
almost unused Riva cable bindings. I no longer use these skis, but
they provided many happy moments on Neff Mountain and environs, Big
Tesuque Bowl, B and LCC backcountry, and Monarch Pass. They are 205s.
If anyone is interested in a pair of reasonably priced relics, please
drop me a line.

depends what kinda ski. but salomon is a well known company that always
satisfies. dynastar is kinda the "budget" company of skis compared to
salomons cutting edge but somewhat overpriced skis.

call me a salomon whore, but remember i got a pair of dynastars myself,
altho i would have much rather invested in a pair of x-scream series if i
had the dough.

I like your sense of humor. And sense of the absurd.

I am also gratified to note that the ski industry's advertising dollars
(and euros and guilder and francs and marks) are well spent. Hate to
think that all that money wasn't buying them anything, while only
serving to raise the prices.

ObSnow 12-18 inch fresh around Tahoe slopes (only 2 inch at the
Skimansion), more coming.

speaking of that, know what REAALLY mortifies me? the total failure of the
pilot as a freeriding ski! i cant believe every1 is giving them such damning
reviews, geez "good cruiser" is not the way to describe a ski for
freeriding.
