I tried the Volant PowerCarves on a powder day in Colorado recently and
if the feeling of driving a Lincoln Town car then they are nice. As the
guy at the ski shop said "Old people really like these skis."

Me, I am more of a Porsche type of guy and really like the Salomon
X-Scream Series and K2 Merlin VI.

I really like my Volant SuperkarveS'es, they are smooth and can really cut
the corduroy.

The theory is that the stainless-steel top skins allow the ski more flex
while still retaining the torsional rigidity. Ohh yea, and they look really
neat. I wouldn't spend the extra cash on the titanium models thought. At
most they contain about 3-square inches of titanium only in the shovel.

I used to work for them so, my opinion may be biased...who knows. More model

Except that Volants are so good, and their owners so loyal to the brand,
I'd have to say this was a troll.

You might hit Alta Vista orDeja News and review past posts about Volants.

Ignore the thread about how they attract lightning. After all, if you've
been a Volant owner long enough, you remember the ads in 1991 with the
lightning bolts, and you know that Hank and Bucky warned you.

I've got Chubs, PowerCarves, ZipCarves, SupercarveI's, and ZmaxG.

I like the SuperCarve I's for hardpack and NASTAR racing, The
PowerCarves for the trees and bumps, and the CHUBS for powder
deeper than six inches. I switched from Salomon 9000 EXP's and
Rossi 7s a few years back and although I've had the opportunity
to DEMO a 23 different brands and models over the past two years,
I still prefer the Volants.

I ski about 110 to 125 days a year and am one of those "old
folks" that likes to drive my "Lincoln Town car" fast through
just about anything.

Thanks for the reply!

I read the reviews at www.goski.com and the overwhelming majority raved
about them -they were also by and large among the "seasoned" skiiers- as
am I. The "Lincoln" anology is perfect!

Thanks for replying tomy inquiry.

I took a look at dejanews - little information available, surprisingly.
If a troll is someone looking to solocit business - I'm not doing so.I
just tried a pair of "Z"("Zip?")'s lastweek recommended by a local shop
pro and really enjoyed them. Now he wants me to try the"Super S"line and
I'm looking forward to it. I'm new to shapped skis and am very surprised
as to the difference they make. I am wondering if they make actually
learning to ski more difficult, though.

Thanks very much,once again.

Thanks for the link, Krissy.

The reviews I found reinforced my own opinion. Found some other
references to the ski at www.goski.com.

I really liked the Zip model I tried. I've skiied 185 cm non-shapped
skis for toomany years!

I was surprised how heavy they proved to be. When I lifted the bare ski,
it seemed quite light. But after the bindings were put on, I was
surprised how heavy they were. Maybe the weight helps in the crud.

Thanks for answering!
Did you downsize the length by comparison to skis you had before these?
The reason I ask is that I see that it is frequently recommended that
you do so when going from a non-shapped ski to a pair of these. I skied
shorter versions in Rosignol and didn'tlike the diminished control.

Thanks again.

I picked up a pair of Superkarve I last year and love them. They have a much
stiffer tail than the Powerkarve which allows me to spring out of turns and
helps
when I need to make jump turns and go edge to edge really quick. They also carve

great in everything from powder to extreme hardpack and blast through crud and
rough conditions very well because they are so stable. A great all mountain ski
for all conditions
except maybe major ice. They are quick enough edge to edge to get me through any

mogul field on KT-22 including 75 Chute.

Although many skis are quicker edge to edge you will have a hard time finding
one this
quick that is this stable and that has such a hugh sweet spot. I even played
around with
driving them from the backseat in deep powder last year and it felt really cool
although
it's not a technique I would want to accidentally adopt.

I also tried the Powerkarve and they rode really well but they were to soft and
never
wanted to leave the snow. They were also to slow edge to edge for me.

love how my PowerKarves hold on ice. I love how my PowerKarves sail

Seriously. I thought it was just me at first, but after asking
around, every single person I've talked to who's tried Volants has
bought them. Demo a pair ASAP. Try mid-fats (the Chubbs are the
widest, PowerKarves next widest, SuperKarves and Tis the most shaped,
but still wider than most shaped skis). I got mine on sale at the end
of the season; if you try them and like them, do the same. In the
meantime, rent 'em.

Replying to Mikes inquiry about shaped skis being possibly more
dificult to learn on, the opposite is true.It is easier to learn to ski
on shaped skis than on conventional skis no matter what the brand and
easier to teach people to ski on shapes. I see much faster progress
from students/guests on shapes. Barry, Mountain Creek.

Don't buy a Volant without trying the Super I. This is the narrowest and
stiffest of the parabolic bunch but even it skis powder with such
incredible ease that I feel there is no reason to go with the softer or
wider ones.
I would recommend that anyone considering a mid fat should give the
Super I a try. Its performance
in all conditions is outstanding.

My preference is for the SuperK S over the PowerK, as I do most of my skiing

I demoed a bunch of skiis at Mt. Snow in Dec. 97. Typical Eastern conditions
-- a couple of inches of snow at the top, then a few bumps, then some hardpack,
then ice, then mush at the bottom of the hill. So you had every condition
possible on a single trail. The PowerKarveLs did best -- even on the blue
glare stuff. That was enough for me. I bought them.

My aging knees led me to try those volants. I bought them to play in the
powder that hides in the trees. They did not dissapoint me. My biggest
surprise was the pleasant, precise, smooth ride on soft groomed runs.
Unfortunately they were a big dissappointment once the snow got harder.
Anyway whenever I can hear my skis on the snow I wait for a better day.
Besides trying different skis brands don't forget to try different
lengths. Don't take anything for granted.
