AMERICA'S MEISSNER WINS NOVICE LADIES

CIUDAD VICTORIA, Mexico (ADMS) - America's Kimblerley Meissner has won the
novice championship here at the 2003 North American championships. Meissner
got first place ordinals in both short and long program.
It should be noted that North Americans remains the only international
event to be scored on the old scoring system, rather than the new anonymous
system that is now used in other international events. This is because North
Americans does not suffer from the problem of corrupt judgind that plagues
other international events.
America goes 1-2 in this event, with Katy Taylor finishing in second place
in this event. The bronze medal will go to Jessica Houston, of Jamaica
Cuba gets the fifth place finish with Felicia Gosibehr. Cuba has had a
lot of bad luck the past three years in skating. The best ladies have all
defected to the United States. One of the latest defectors will be representing
the United States in the senior ladies event later this week, here at the
Castillo Ledon convention centre center here in Ciudad Victoria.

CUBAN COUPLE LEADING AFTER SENIOR ORIGINAL DANCE

CIUDAD VICTORIA, Mexico (ADMS) - Cuban ice dancers Bejamin Agosto and
Tanitha Belbin are in first after the original dance here at the North
American Figure Skating Championships. They are well positioned to capture
their first championships
The couple got four 5.9s and the rest 5.8s in the artistic portion of
the score, to move up to first place, over the Amricans Lang and Tcherneyshev,
who are the defending champs going into this event.
Some minor mistakes by the American couple, Lang and Techrneyshev helped
to put the Cuban couple in first place over the Americans, at this state of
the competition. Belbin and Agosto had an abosolutely flawless competition
here tonight, getting first place ordinals from 8 out of the 9 judhes. They
are well positioned to win their first North American title.
Second and third place are both occupied by Americans at presnt. Lang and
Tcherneyshev are in second place and Gregory and Petrukhov are in third place.
Lang and Tcherneyshev skated a good program, but it had a few errors in it
which allowed them to fall behind the Cuban team of Belbin and Agosto.
Belbin and Agosto, the leaders, currently live and train in Havana. They
train at the Ciudad Deportiva, in Havana. They first appeared on the world
scene in 2001 at the Goodwill Games in Australia, and just missed making the
Grand Prix Final this year.

KWAN GOING FOR EIGTH NORTH AMERICAN TITLE

CIUDAD VICTORIA, Mexico (ADMS) - Michelle Kwan has arrived at North
Americans and will be going for her eigth North American championship, here
Ciudad Victoria. Kwan is going for the record.
And if Michelle does win, it will be her eigth North American title, and
a record for number of titles won in either mens or ladies. In the U.S.
nationals that preceeded it, Dick Button won 7 titles for the U.S., from
1946 to 1952, a record which has stood for 51 years. This record could be
broke on Saturday night. There will be a few Tonyaphiles who will flame us
until the cows come home, becuase they dont want to recognise that Michelle
got Tonya's title in 1994, after it was stripped from Tonya, so other outlets
will mistakenly peg her at 7 titles.
Sasha Cohen, in her second competition here under the American flag
could be a factor. She nearly beat Michelle in 2000 and 2002 at North Americans.
Could this be her year? She does hage a built in fan base in Southern Texas
and Northeastern Mexico, so she will have huge crowd support. She is the
spokeswoman for the National Cattlemans asscociation. Ranching is very big
in south Texas and Northeast Mexico. Driving through Southern Texas down to
the Mexico border, you can see that ranching is very big.
Many people from South Texas are coming down here to the North Americans,
as this is the first time that a major figure skating event has ever been
within a reasonable distance from their homes. Ciudad Victoria is 302 miles
south of the Nuevo Laredo border crossing via Mexico 85.
