I am the creator and Admin of the Usenet newsgroup
alt.binaries.images.underwater. I am also a PADI-certified diver. As you
can see for yourself in the quoted rec.scuba posts below, some r.s. posters
have hatched a plan to "take over an under-utilized Binary newsgroup." Many
of their picture-posts have recently appeared in a.b.i.u., and I want it
clearly understood THEY ARE WELCOME THERE. But I must respond to the
"takeover talk" here in rec.scuba.
One of a.b.i.u.'s regular posters who visits both newsgroups has already
copied the rec.scuba "takeover" posts into ABIU. I wish to head off a
needless flame-war between dedicated partisan fans of each newsgroup. When
ABIU's divers and UW fans see themselves publicly characterized as "perverts"
and "fags," a flame-war is GOING to result. I've asked a.b.i.u.'s regulars
to "hold their fire." I wish to nip the war in the bud with a some
background information on ABIU, and a friendly invitation for other divers to
visit the newsgroup and make their own INFORMED opinions of it. I will also
post the a.b.i.u. FAQ here in rec.scuba later today.
I created ABIU on April 7th of last year. In its first 12 months, ABIU
has received over 18,000 posts (with very little spam, compared to other
"picture" newsgroups). That's an average of 1,500 posts per month ...and
it's now above 2,000 a month. I do not know why ABIU is referred to below as
"under-utilized" and "little-used." Perhaps someone's ISP's News-server
allots only a minimal amount of disk-space to ABIU, resulting in few posts
showing in it when that ISP's customer clicks on ABIU. But I promise you,
ABIU is hardly "little-used" ...at 2,000 posts-per-month.
Because of the (deliberate) broadness I wrote into it's Usenet Charter
(topic) statement, divers and underwater fans of many kinds visit and post in
ABIU. You see, ANY underwater image is welcome in ABIU. That means coral,
fish, bikinis, artistic nudes, submarines, and even the UW "pornography"
referred to in the quoted rec.scuba posts below. Simple nudity may be
"erotic" but that hardly makes it "porn," Actually, not much true X-rated
pornography shows up in ABIU. Such photos are kinda rare, y'know? I'm not
into porn, nor did I create ABIU for such images ...but ABIU is not a
Moderated newsgroup and I can't control what gets posted into it. This *is*
the Internet, after all. But I guess to some folks, any bare breast (even a
mermaid's), is smut. <sigh> Oh well, there's no accounting for taste.
In a moment I will post the a.b.i.u. FAQ here in rec.scuba, as well as the
"Hold your fire!" message I posted to ABIU's readers. But first I'll close
this post with a note that I think I understand what Lee Bell actually had in
mind, and say publicly that I bear him (and his friends) no grudge. I think
he wanted a Binary newsgroup to post his own self-made scuba pictures (fish,
divers, coral) into. Creating a *brand-new* Usenet newsgroup is a long,
complicated, time-consuming (6-week) process ...or it is IF you comply fully
with Usenet's prescribed procedure for that. (If you don't, most ISPs and
NewsAdmins WON'T carry your new NG.) Lee found ABIU, assumed it was
under-utilized, and moved in with his photos. Fine with me. I like seeing
every new scuba image that turns up in ABIU, be they coral, nudes, fish, or
whatever. The a.b.i.u. FAQ encourages them all. But people should make
certain a house is in fact unoccupied before they try to move in and take it
over.
I hope many of rec.scuba's divers will visit "our house" and feel
comfortable and welcome. The FAQ requests all image-posts be titled and
"rated" for content, and I've been running a major campaign for that lately.
With proper labeling & rating, no one need view material they'd find
offensive. Just like with movies.
Please do read the "takeover" posts below, copied from rec.scuba. The
original was written by Lee Bell, and replied to by KM Yong. StopTheFags
(Don) also posted a reply to Lee in rec.scuba, with an accusation that most
ABIU posts are from the homosexual community ...but I have not copied that
post here.
Sincere regards,
J.R.

I think you're wasting your time. There are other options (see below).

Yep. The perverts and fags have a stronghold on that group. I tried
posting some stuff there a while back (uw photos, not porno ;-) and I
got sick and tired of wading thru their crap. Another group that they
haven't seemed to have 'penetrated' <G> yet is
alt.binaries.pictures.sports.ocean, and that's where I've been posting
a few uw pics from time to time.
I seriously doubt that you're going to run off the pervies and fags from
alt.binaries.images.underwater, but good luck.

Nope. (see above) Won't do any good unless you want to argue with
the pervies and fags there. Use alt.binaries.pictures.sports.ocean
instead and let the fags and pervs jackoff in the pool...

By the time I checked out alt.binaries.images.underwater ng, your pics
had expired and I couldn't see them. Bummer. Again, the other group is
better, and the last time I posted a pic there, it was up for a week or
so.

Huh? I've been reading usenet for 10 years, and this is the first
I've heard of a group having an "Admin". Some groups are moderated,
but that's not what you seem to be claiming. Can you explain to us
exactly what a usenet group "Admin" does?
