David,
Thanks for the pic. In future, though, could you put the picture on a
website, and post the URL, please? AFAIK, this is a no-binary's NG.
Iain
At anyrate thank you for your advice. It was much more polite than others
are capable of.
David.

funny, but search for 'rec.scuba faq' in Northern Light, and the first
hit was good.
Search newsgroups with Deja, and the fourth was good.
I guess that your investigation involved no searches, but only
assumtions?

Well, I have been reading newsgroups for going on 15 years now, and
as far as I can remember, that has *never* been the "rule". Binaries
postings go in .binaries newsgroups *only*. In fact, that was why the
.binaries groups were created to begin with. The idea was that sites
that did not want to devote bandwidth or disk space to handling
binary postings did not have to - the could simply choose not to
carry those groups.
Binaries and encoded postings do not belong in discussion groups,
period.

I don't have a copy of his email, or I'd repost it for you.

Posting Binaries
I have a great scuba related GIF/piece of software/sound sample. What should
I do with it?
Please bear with me for a second. By convention, the net is divided into
areas. There is an area for written discussion, an area for posting gifs, an
area for posting binaries, and an area for posting sound samples. The total
volume of postings in the net is very high. It is so high that many sites
are picking and choosing the posting areas (rec, alt.binaries, etc.) that
they want very carefully. One area that many sites have cut is binary
postings. Many news administrators consider binary postings to be marginally
useful, in comparison to their size. So they don't carry them.
I suspect that many news administrators also consider rec.scuba to be of
marginal utility. If rec.scuba becomes loaded with binaries, it will be
considered a binary group, and will be dropped by those sites.
Finally, many folks pay by the byte for their connections. If they get
rec.scuba, they have signed up for discussion, not for binaries. Please
respect their wishes.
If you have a binary you wish to make available, contact Peter Yee or
Jonathan <jo...@halcyon.com> and let them know. If you want to post it, post
it to the right alt.sources or alt.binaries group, and post a reference to
it here in rec.scuba.
I found the link in the signature of Dan Baruk (one of our frequent
posters).
I then went to google (www.,google.com) and typed "rec.scuba.faq" and came
up with several links. The topic about posting binaries was in the first
entry. How hard did you look for the FAQ?
Congrats on using newsgroups for 9 years.
In the various newsgroups I've used. they've been text-only.
Just think what could've been saved if you'd said
'Hey all,. may I post a binary picture to the newsgroup?'
We're a rather friendly bunch here.

If you have been on the newsgroups for "9 years" then why did you
think it was appropriate to post a binary file in a newsgroup that
clearly did not invite binaries? You are wrong. Just because there is
not ".binaries" does not mean that you can post binaries. Otherwise
every newsgroup would have to be titled like rec.scuba.text. Your
alleged time and experience in the newsgroups should have by now
allowed you exposure to the policies and accepted practices of the
newsgroups. Again, post the pic on a web site and invite all to view
via the URL would be a perfectly practice!

Seriously out of date. I tried to make a 'call to arms' to create a
new one, but the lackluster response suggested no one is really
interested in a FAQ until a problem pops up.

I'm sort of interested in distilling carefully written discussions out
into a FAQ, as long as noone calls me pedantic (Hi Vic!).
