I have my YMCA OWI, NAUI OWII, PADI AOW, and NAUI Rescue Diver certifications.

I have read whosbest.txt in the ames.arc.nasa.gov archive.

Where I live there are shops/instructors that teach NASDS, SSI, PADI, NAUI, YMCA
advanced & dive master/coordinator courses. Could someone compare/contrast the
advanced and/or dive master/coordinator courses from each of the agencies
(including material covered and pre-requisites)? Please note that I realize that the
instructor makes all the difference in the world. If I receive email on this, I will
summarize and post.

Thanks

Well, one thing that maybe you aren't aware of, is that "advanced" does not
mean the same thing to every agency. I don't know about most of the programs,
but I do know that the NAUI sequence is Open Water I, Open Water II, Advanced,
whereas PADI calls equivalent courses Open Water, Advanced, Master (check me
on that last one, though). That is, NAUI OW II = PADI Advanced.
This isn't because one or the other is a better course, it's because the
curriculum for PADI Advanced is the same as NAUI OW II (both involve more
dives and more variety of dives than the first course, maybe including a deep
dive and a night dive), and PADI Master (I think) has the same material as
NAUI Advanced (including navigation, some rescue material I think, etc).

From what I hear, YMCA uses names like NAUI, but someone like Dave Waller who's
a YMCA instructor could tell you better than I could. Check the curriculum
of the course before you assume two courses are equivalent. Also, if there
is an instructor or store that offers courses from two or more agencies,
they can probably tell you what's equivalent.

OK, I think it works like this: Until recently PADI didn't really
offer a course at the NAUI Adv. level. They now offer an
Advanced-plus rating, which covers theory at the level of the PADI DM
couse, Medic First Aid, and one dive in each of some number of
additional "specialty areas" such as wrecks, photography, etc., beyond
the PADI Adv. requirements. I think this is closest in spirit to NAUI
Adv. The PADI Master Scuba Diver rating is for completing Rescue
Diver plus five full specialty ratings (involving some theory and
several dives *each*).

Here's a table describing NAUI, PADI, & YMCA non-leadership certifications as
I understand them. I'd appreciate an SSI instructor filling in SSI's
certifications, and of course, any corrections are solicited. Agencies are
listed in alphabetic order.

NAUI OW1 OW2 Adv Spec Master
PADI OW1 Adv Adv+ Spec Master
SSI OW1 AOW
YMCA OW1 OW2 Adv Spec Master

Just to get some more discussion here ...

What's about the CMAS / VDST certifications?

I know they're not very common in US but I'm a CMAS ** (VDST Silver) diver
and wanna know where are the differences.

If there are problems to compare the certifications,
I can give you some details of the courses ...

Greetings
Jan

Disclaimer:
I really dive here in germany, all over the year!
Maybe I'll get a Dry-Suit some day :-)

I hold certifications from YMCA, PADI, CMAS and NSS-CDS. One of the nice
things about YMCA and CMAS is if you hold a certification in one, all
you have to do is submit the money and paperwork to receive an equal
certification in the other.

Well Jan, bad news.

I just called YMCA National HQ about conversions from CMAS to YMCA.
YMCA does NOT allow for a direct conversion from CMAS to YMCA. You can
convert YMCA to CMAS with $10 (US) and a copy of your C-card but the
conversion is not reversable. This really surprised me! I thought it
would be a two-way street.

As for the other certifying agencies, I have not heard of any conversion
possibilities in either direction. I do know that that of the diving
areas here in the Southeast US (Huntsville, AL - Birmingham, AL - Panama
City, FL) I have not had a problem using my CMAS card.

If you have any other questions, let me know.
