Hi there,
I have been free diving and collecting tropical fish for years now in Virginia
and North Carolina. I was wondering if anyone else collects in this group.
I am always interested in knowing how others are doing, what they are seeing or
collecting and where.
If you would like to see what I have been catching (angelfish, butterflyfish,
damsels, tangs, etc.), check out my web site at
vb1.com/fish
or vb1.com/fish/collect.htm
Thanks,
Jon

Depends on where you are, what you're catching, how you're catching it and
what you're going to do with it. Here in S. Florida, it is legal to take
tropical fish for your own tank outside of protected areas. You need a
Florida salt water fishing license. To take fish for resale, you need a
commercial license, perhaps one specifically for tropical fish. Since I've
never sold a fish I caught, I'm not sure what the specific requirements are.
Some chemicals, all explosives and a number of other fishing methods are
prohibited. They're also unethical and impractical since they damage the
fish, the reef and all it's residents.

There are some areas of the Keys designated as No take zones. They are marked
and publicized and taking anything from them is a crime.

It's long been illegal to take tropicals or anything else in Pennikamp State
Park, the Key Largo Marine Sanctuary and probably in the portion of
Everglades National Park that extends into Florida Bay. Elliot Key is a
lobster sanctuary. I'm not sure whether other marine resources are
protected as well. There's also talk of protected "replenishment zones" in
the newly formed management area that includes virtually all of the reef
systems in the Florida Keys. Enforcement personnel are a common sight at
the boat ramps and on the water in these areas. Enforcement officers in
scuba gear are not uncommon, particularly during lobster season. Generally
speaking, the system works through fear. The fines for violating wildlife
laws in protected areas are exceptional and can include confication of
boats, cars, trailers and equipment involved. Since there is always
someplace else to go, most boaters are pretty careful to comply with
Florida's wildlife laws.

Actually, the Sanctuary includes all of the Keys reefs but the new no take
zones are relatively small.

Do vehicles actually get siezed (and kept) often? That is a recourse for
abalone poachers, but far too often they get these back after the trial.

Probably not. The loss of a boat or car is obviously a very significant
penalty for a crime where impact is not easy to quantify. Still, even the
temporary loss of a boat or car and the difficulty and cost of recovering it
is a significant disincentive. Probably the most significant effect of
confiscation is that it helps ensure the violator shows up for trial and
pays his fines. Here in S. Florida, a good portion of the boating, diving
and fishing population comes from somewhere else and extradition for
wildlife violations is very, very rare.

Judge Ruth Becker of Monroe County gives jail time to first offenders.
We're talking Florida here, where they confiscate cars in some areas from guys
who stop to talk to working girls( They set up stings with good looking women).
Woe to the person who's boat or car is paid for and gets caught with illegal
fish or over the bag limit amounts.
These No Take zones are fairly new, except for most of the ones Lee mentioned
in the upper keys, and few cases have been publicized. But to think that your
property is safe is a very risky gamble not worth taking for a few fish.

Still stalking, Mikey?
If I remember correctly, next it will be a new anonymous character ranting about
the charter.
Wait a minute,,, I remember you,,,, didn't you put out an invitation to all
interested people to e-mail you 2 years ago to help write a new charter? Hmm,
come to think of it, you put out the same invitation last year. I guess with no
replies, it just left you and your imaginary/anonymous friends to do it and you
all were just not up to the task.
Typical hate monger style ,when alone, all talk no substance.

An appology to the rest of the group for answering this guys intrusion into
this thread. He's got some fixation on parts of my anatomy and I can't get rid
of him. I guess I should just ignore him but frankly, he's just so easy to wind
up,,,,,,,

BTW, I've never lost a car to the cops but poor Gomer could be their poster
boy.

Fluffy, you're a real "me, too" kind of guy. Regardless of your
obsession with homosexuality and bestiality, I'm impressed with your
originality. 、ravo!

You and Charly girl would make a good pair, shaking your pom-poms and
all, but watch out for Charly's friend, Gomer...

Speaking of which --- Charly girl, if you had half a brain you'd be
able to ascertain where my posts originate from. That would probably
aid you in your <choke> <wheeze> feeble efforts. Shake those things,
girl --- but don't let the sock jiggle its way out of your panties...

Why would I give a ratsazz where your drivels coming from?
You know,, you remind me of an ostrich. It sticks its head in the sand and
thinks it's invisible. As soon as you delete a post, you think it disappears
from the rest of the world so you can whine and cry foul thinking no one
remembers what you post. Your a joke.
They say profanity is a feeble effort by a weak mind to express itself

Say what you want about profanity, shit-for-brains.

I'll comment about your cowardice and lies any gawdammed time I please,

You, Bob, Mike and Steve all should go diving together and compare sock
size...

Now, what's really funny is your repeated ignorant use of "your". Of
course, I understand that there are much more important things to deal
with down there in those southern schools. Must have been tough, trying
to keep the boys out of your pants...

You seem obsessed with cmccar31's pants.
You will get thrown out of the locker room for that.

Not cool, strange, even queer...

I guess your topic is ButtDiving ?
