Passengers help foil attack on Detroit-bound plane

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) - An attempted terrorist attack on a Christmas Day
flight began with a pop and a puff of smoke - sending passengers scrambling
to subdue a Nigerian man who claimed to be acting on orders from al-Qaida to
blow up the airliner, officials and travelers said.
The commotion began as Northwest Airlines Flight 253, carrying 278
passengers and 11 crew members from Amsterdam, prepared to land in Detroit
just before noon Friday. Travelers said they smelled smoke, saw a glow, and
heard what sounded like firecrackers. At least one person climbed over
others and jumped on the man, who officials say was trying to ignite an
explosive device.
"It sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase," said Peter Smith, a
passenger from the Netherlands. "First there was a pop, and then (there) was
smoke."
Smith said one passenger, sitting opposite the man, climbed over passengers,
went across the aisle and tried to restrain the man. The heroic passenger
appeared to have been burned.
Afterward, the suspect was taken to a front-row seat with his pants cut off
and his legs burned. Multiple law enforcement officials also said the man
appeared badly burned on his legs, indicating the explosive was strapped
there. The components were apparently mixed in-flight and included a powdery
substance, multiple law enforcement and counterterrorism officials said.
The White House said it believed it was an attempted act of terrorism and
stricter security measures were quickly imposed on airline travel. Dutch
anti-terrorism authorities said the U.S. has asked all airlines to take
extra precautions on flights worldwide that are bound for the United States.
The incident was reminiscent of Richard Reid, who tried to destroy a
trans-Atlantic flight in 2001 with explosives hidden in his shoes, but was
subdued by other passengers.
Multiple law enforcement officials identified the suspect in Friday's
attempted attack as Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab. He was described as
Nigerian.
One law enforcement official said the man claimed to have been instructed by
al-Qaida to detonate the plane over U.S. soil, but other law enforcement
officials cautioned that such claims could not be verified immediately, and
said the man may have been acting independently - inspired but not
specifically trained or ordered by terror groups.
All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation
was continuing.
Intelligence and anti-terrorism officials in Yemen said they were
investigating claims by the suspect that he picked up the explosive device
and instructions on how to use it in that country. The officials spoke on
condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the
media.
The man was being questioned Friday evening. An intelligence official said
he was being held and treated in an Ann Arbor, Mich., hospital. The hospital
said one passenger from the flight was taken to the University of Michigan
Medical Center in Ann Arbor, but referred all inquiries to the FBI.
Melinda Dennis, who was seated in the front row of the plane, said the man
involved was brought to the front row and seated near her. She said his legs
appeared to be badly burned and his pants were cut off. She said he was
taken off the plane handcuffed to a stretcher.
One law enforcement official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said
Mutallab's name had surfaced earlier on at least one U.S. intelligence
database, but he was not on a watch list or a no-fly list.
The suspect boarded in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to
Detroit, Rep. Peter King, the ranking GOP member of the House Homeland
Security Committee, told CNN. A spokeswoman for police at the Schiphol
airport in Amsterdam declined comment about the case or about security
procedures at the airport for Flight 253.
Dutch airline KLM says the connection in Amsterdam from Lagos, Nigeria, to
Detroit involves a change in carrier and a change in aircraft.
Schiphol airport, one of Europe's busiest with a heavy load of transit
passengers from Africa and Asia to North America, strictly enforces European
security regulations including only allowing small amounts of liquid in hand
luggage that must be placed inside clear plastic bags.
A spokesman for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Akin Olukunle,
said all passengers and their luggage are screened before boarding
international flights. He also said the airport in Lagos cleared a U.S.
Transportation Security Administration audit in November.
"We had a pass mark," Olukunle said. "We actually are up to standards in all
senses."
Nigeria's information minister, Dora Akunyili, condemned the attempted
bombing. She said the government has opened its own investigation into the
suspect and will work with U.S. authorities.
"We state very clearly that as a nation we abhor all forms of violence,"
Akunyili said in a statement issued Saturday.
London's Metropolitan Police also was working with U.S. officials, a
spokeswoman said, and searches were being conducted in that city. The
spokeswoman would not provide additional details, including what connection
the suspect had to London or what was being searched. She spoke on condition
of anonymity in line with department policy.
Delta Air Lines Inc., which acquired Northwest last year, said a passenger
caused a disturbance, was subdued, and the crew requested that law
enforcement officials meet the flight.
Passenger Syed Jafri, a U.S. citizen who had flown from the United Arab
Emirates, said the incident occurred during the plane's descent. Jafri said
he was seated three rows behind the passenger and said he saw a glow, and
noticed a smoke smell. Then, he said, "a young man behind me jumped on him."
"Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic," he said.
Federal officials said there would be heightened security for both domestic
and international flights at airports across the country, but the
intensified levels would likely be "layered," differing from location to
location depending on alerts, security concerns and other factors.
Passengers can expect to see heightened screening, more bomb-sniffing dog
and officer units and behavioral-detection specialists at some airports, but
there will also be unspecified less visible precautions as well, officials
said.
The FBI and the Homeland Security Department issued an intelligence note on
Nov. 20 about the threat picture for the holiday season, which was obtained
by The Associated Press. At the time, officials said they had no specific
information about attack plans by al-Qaida or other terrorist groups.
President Barack Obama was notified of the incident and discussed it with
security officials, the White House said. Officials said he is monitoring
the situation and receiving regular updates from his vacation spot in
Hawaii.

Here in germany, they said in the news, some US-authorities knew about
the specific bomber guy, but failed to inform security of Schiphol to
prevent bording. So why gathering privat information from millions of
passengers when a dumbass does not hit the red bottom in a real thred?
Or did they subdue alarm on purpose?
Only a couple of hours after the incident we heared from Obama in the
news "we will have more controls and security..."
When they know exactly what to do without much investigation i have a
couple of questions.
Do they realy know what to do that fast?
Do they have a clue at all (the politicans)?
Are there other reasons to cut civil rights (which they don`t tell us)
and the incident is used as alibi to do so?
Remember, we (here in germany) have already the situation, that an air
passenger has to go through almost strip search even on internal
flights. But still there are many ways to smuggle weapons...
Any explanation for that plastic bag nonsens? Next time the terrorists
will use babies to carry liters of white liquid explosives into the cabin.
All I see currently are millons of honest passengers searched by
outsourced, uneducated, unfriendly "agents" on their own power trip.
And it does not have much benefits on air safety.

In response to a Nigerian Muslim trying to blow up a flight from Amsterdam
to Detroit on Christmas Day, the government will now prohibit international
travelers from going to the bathroom in the last hour before the plane
lands.
Terrorists who plan to bomb planes during the first seven hours of the
eight-hour flight, however, should face no difficulties, provided they wait
until after the complimentary beverage service has been concluded.
How do they know Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab didn't wait until the end of the
flight to try to detonate explosives because he heard the stewardess
announce that the food service was over and seats would have to be placed in
their upright position? I can't finish my snack? This plane is going down!
Also prohibited in the last hour of international flights will be: blankets,
pillows, computers and in-flight entertainment. Another triumph in Janet
Napolitano's "Let's stay one step behind the terrorists" policy!
For the past eight years, approximately 2 million Americans a day have been
subjected to humiliating searches at airport security checkpoints, forced to
remove their shoes and jackets, to open their computers, and to remove all
liquids from their carry-on bags, except minuscule amounts in marked 3-ounce
containers placed in Ziploc plastic bags -- folding sandwich bags are
verboten -- among other indignities.
This, allegedly, was the price we had to pay for safe airplanes. The one
security precaution the government refused to consider was to require extra
screening for passengers who looked like the last three-dozen terrorists to
attack airplanes.
Since Muslims took down Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988,
every attack on a commercial airliner has been committed by foreign-born
Muslim men with the same hair color, eye color and skin color. Half of them
have been named Mohammed.
An alien from the planet "Not Politically Correct" would have surveyed the
situation after 9/11 and said: "You are at war with an enemy without
uniforms, without morals, without a country and without a leader -- but the
one advantage you have is they all look alike. ... What? ... What did I

The only advantage we have in a war with stateless terrorists was ruled out
of order ab initio by political correctness.
And so, despite 5 trillion Americans opening laptops, surrendering lip gloss
and drinking breast milk in airports day after day for the past eight years,
the government still couldn't stop a Nigerian Muslim from nearly blowing up
a plane over Detroit on Christmas Day.
The "warning signs" exhibited by this particular passenger included the
following:

He paid nearly $3,000 in cash for his ticket.
He had no luggage.

Two months ago, his father warned the U.S. that he was a radical Muslim and
possibly dangerous.
If our security procedures can't stop this guy, can't we just dispense with
those procedures altogether? What's the point exactly?
(To be fair, the father's warning might have been taken more seriously if he
had not simultaneously asked for the U.S. Embassy's Social Security number
and bank routing number in order to convey a $28 million inheritance that
was trapped in a Nigerian bank account.)
The warning from Abdulmutallab's father put his son on some list, but not
the "no fly" list. Apparently, it's tougher to get on the "no fly" list than
it was to get into Studio 54 in the '70s. Currently, the only people on the
"no fly" list" are the Blind Sheik and Sean Penn.
The government is like the drunk looking for his keys under a lamppost.
Someone stops to help, and asks, "Is this where you lost them?" No, the
drunk answers, but the light's better here.
The government refuses to perform the only possibly effective security
check -- search Muslims -- so instead it harasses infinitely compliant
Americans. Will that help avert a terrorist attack? No, but the Americans
don't complain.
The only reason Abdulmutallab didn't succeed in bringing down an airplane
with 278 passengers was that: (1) A brave Dutchman leapt from his seat and
extinguished the smoldering Nigerian; and (2) the Nigerian apparently didn't
have enough detonating fluid to cause a powerful explosion.
In addition to the no blanket, no computer, no bathroom rule, perhaps the
airlines could add this to their preflight announcement about seat belts and
emergency exits: "Should a passenger sitting near you attempt to detonate an
explosive device, you may be called upon to render emergency assistance.
Would you be willing to do so under those circumstances? If not we will
assign you another seat ..."

Rumours said that the TSA will provide diapers instead, as a special
service on request. Passengers will be prohibited to supply their own,
to prevent them from using diapers as IEDs (improvised explosive
devices, with the absorbent gel replaced with C4.
Of course it need not be mentioned, that babies with diapers on will
be prohibited either, unless they wear the provided ones.

terrorists that crashed the planes on 9/11. The guy isn't Arab, he's
black. Duh frickin' duh.
So now Ann wants profiling of all Arab-looking and all black-looking
passengers. Only us whities will be able to pass security with a
happy wave toward TSA while our Arab-American and black-American
friends all get strip-searched. Why don't we just segregate the
airports into Whites-only lines and Others-of-Color lines rather than
all this elite/first-class nonsense. Let the white folk sit up front
and make all the colored folk sit in back. Just like the old days.
