I am looking into a vulcanized rubber dry suit and have been told that
the Gates suits are the same as the Viking ones.

I am specifically looking at the following models

Viking Pro Dry Suit Pro 1000
Gates Vulcanized Drysuit Pro AM 1000

and am somewhat considering the following:

Gates PRO-HD 1500 Drysuit
Viking Heavy Duty Suit

Any comments about the suits or any differences/similarities in
materials or manufacturing would be great.

The Viking is an excellent suit (I have the sport suit), but the suit
and seals on the Gates are much heavier.

I dive a Sport Viking, but they are no longer available. I have put Pro
seals on mine since they are heavier than Sport Seals. Many of the guys
that I dive with, and my lady friend, dive Viking Pro suits, and I can
highly recommend them. They put up with the abuse that we dish out in the
ice and zebra mussels, and are very easy to repair on site. I can't speak
for the Gates suits, since none of the guys I dive with use one.

Graham,

I have the Gates Pro AM 1000 and love it. I have a friend who has the Gates
PRO-HD 1500 and he says it is too heavy I think it would be great for a
commericial diver. The Gates has four rows of stitching on all seems the
Viking is a little lighter rubber and is not sewn as well. Both are fine
drysuits. But I really think the Gates is the better suit and they both
cost about the same!

I dive a Viking Surveyor Pro with the dry hood in the UK 5-16 deg C, a good
suit I must say (I love the dry hood) but the parts service in the UK is so
bad that I will go for a Gates next time round, I have had a Gates Pro HD
in the passed and I have never seen a dry suit put together so well and few
people will be able to tell Gates anything about rubbers. One other suit
you may look at is the Avon not well known on the sport diving scene in the
UK but wildly used in commercial diving. Essentially the same construction
as the Viking and Gates but the rubber material used has MUCH more stretch
in it so the comfort is lightly to be better. The company, like Gates a
rubber specialist, the quality I donÕt know but I would expect it to be
good looking at there offerings in boats etc......

I'll take the Vikings by thirty.

Gates is such a puny guy.
