I know one.
Check the uw-photo list. Aside from some professionals and some
manufacturers there are some excellent serious amatuers on the list. Lots of
the info traded is just crap, but there are true nuggets of information that
one would never find on their own. Of especially helpful info is when the
list gets on the subject of equipment....you can really find out the
shortcomings as well as the positive aspects of equipment that have been
used and dived by others. Much of the theory and method of photography
threads are equally helpful.
Here is a message from the list manager that will help you understand it's
intent as well as how to subscribe:
*********************************************************
UW-PHOTO is a mailing list devoted to discussing all aspects of underwater
photography. Topics in UW-PHOTO can include equipment, video, schools,
techniques, and even showing off. UW-PHOTO will become an archive for
items related to underwater photography which will be accessible through
UW-PHOTO, anonymous FTP, and the World-Wide-Web. (see below)
TO SEND A MESSAGE to all the subscribers of the uw-photo mailing list,
simply address your e-mail to uw-p...@world.std.com.
NETIQUETTE
----------
One of the advantages of a mailing list over usenet is that in general,
the signal to noise ratio is high: more content, less junk.
Unfortunately, this also means that list members own the responsibility
to keep it this way. Off-topic mailing should be discouraged. These
include, but are certainly not limited to: general travel questions,
general scuba questions, commercial postings, etc.
In addition, before posting to the entire list, ask yourself a
question: "Is this going to be useful for an individual or a large
portion of the group?" If the answer is "individual", use private e-mail.
(To reply to the individual, just copy and paste their address into your
reply.)
Lastly, please limit the amount of material you quote (or re-include)
in any replies to the list. Especially annoying are one line
answers to long posts that include the whole long posting first.
Please use <snip> annotations liberally as appropriate.
For uw-photo-digest subscribers, there are few things more irritating
than seeing the same message posted again, and again, and again,
because people quote the entire original posting. It's just not
necessary and it makes reading difficult.
RETURNED POSTINGS
-----------------
Periodically, one of your postings may get returned. Although
uw-photo is not moderated in any official way, a number of filters
exist to automatically weed out surperflous "junk" or spam. Items
which may trigger a rejection include: quoting the entire message;
sending MIME messages such as HTML, VCARDs; not giving your message a
descriptive subject; including enclosures, pictures, or programs; or
asking how to subscribe or unsubscribe.
Occasionally, you may have followed all the rules and I or the filters
goofed. Please feel free to forward the entire rejected message back
to the list owner <uw-phot...@world.std.com> pointing out the
goof.
WEBSITE
-------
Currently, no one is hosting a complete uw-photo archive site. There
are a couple sites which archive some portion of back issues of uw-photo.
If you'd like to post a question to the list, it's always courteous to
check to see if the answer is readily available. Check out the
following sites:

http://www.egroups.com/group/uw-photo
UW-PHOTO FORMATS
----------------
Currently uw-photo is separated into two lists, UW-PHOTO and
UW-PHOTO-DIGEST. The normal uw-photo list forwards a copy of any
message sent to uw-phototo each list recipient as each message is
received by majordomo. The uw-photo-digest lists collects between
12-25 messages (depending on length) and then forwards a single,
larger message. This cuts down on the number of messages you may
receive in any one day.
[For uw-photo subscribers on Unix systems, I highly recommend the
'filter' or 'procmail' utility. Filtering programs allow you to route
messages based on subject, sender, or recipient into their own file so
that messages from the uw-photo group don't clog up your normal
mailbox.]
SPAM POLICY
-----------
Because uw-photo is an open list, from time to time someone will spam
the list or send a message which is off-topic. The best response to a
spam is no response at all! Please don't start a "that was
inappropriate" flood of responses. Replying to the list rapidly
causes the "cure" to be worse than the original disease. If you feel
sufficiently outraged by the spam, the proper response it to forward
the message with your reply to the postmaster at the site from where
the post came from. You may also copy the spammer as well as
uw-photo-owner (that's me).
SUBSCRIBING AND UNSUBSCRIBING
-----------------------------
UW-PHOTO and UW-PHOTO-DIGEST are maintained with the help of
majordomo, a mailing list administration program. If at any time you
wish to subscribe or unsubscribe, you can send a message to
majo...@world.std.com.
Majordomo accepts a number of commands, a few of which are listed below:
subscribe <list> [<address>]
unsubscribe <list> [<address>]
who <list>
info <list>
help
end
All commands in [brackets] are optional. Majordomo will use your
return address as the default for subscribe and unsubscribe requests.
All commands must be in the body of the message, NOT on the subject
line, one command per line. After the last command, place an 'end' to
tell majordomo you're done with commands.
To switch from being subscribed to UW-PHOTO to UW-PHOTO-DIGEST or
visa-versa, just send a message to majordomo and unsubcribe from the
first list on one line and subscribe to the second list on the next
line. [You can do both in the same mail message!]
If you change e-mail addresses, first UNSUBSCRIBE from the old address
and then resubscribe from the new address. If you've already moved,
you can still unsubscribe from the old address -- it will just get
sent to the list owner for approval.
Enjoy the list!
