FYI, below I have cut'n'pasted the text of a message I posted in
alt.binaries.images.underwater about the "take over a.b.i.u" posts
appearing in rec.scuba. Its original title was "Re: Rec.scuba
'takeover' posts: EVERYBODY PLEASE READ"

To Jim, Lee, Michael, SBL (Steve), and the newsgroup,
Acting as ABIU's admin, I had ALREADY looked into rec.scuba to
investigate the "takeover" posts, before Jim quoted them here in ABIU.
Here is my opinion, for whatever it's worth.
The best course of action is to "let the matter lie." I'd thought
of doing what Jim did... putting the rec.scuba stuff up for everyone
here to see. I decided it was more strategic to not do so. As a
Usenet veteran, I can assure all of you that responding in rec.scuba
will only prompt a pointless war between the partisan supporters of
each newsgroup.
So, let's just leave this alone, please. Let it lie, and let it
die. Even if you (justifiably) feel provoked by the "take over
a.b.i.u." talk, please DO NOT go pick a fight over in rec.scuba.
Rec.scuba's Usenet Charter-statement makes no mention of underwater
nude photos. Rec.scuba is not a Binary newsgroup, so NO photos/images
are appropriate there. Apparently, a couple of rec.scuba guys were
looking for a place to post their fish pictures without having to go
through the (considerable) effort of creating a newsgroup. They've now
been told there already is another Binary newsgroup for scuba photos on
Usenet. It is alt.binaries.pictures.sports.ocean, and ABPSO's Usenet
Charter-statement does not mention nudes as being "on-topic." But
ABIU's Charter (and FAQ) DOES say that BOTH underwater nudes and fish
images are on-topic, and are welcome here. So, that's that. End of
debate. Period. Scuba-divers now have two Binary newsgroups for their
photos, and can choose to visit one or both. Those who see UW nudity
as offensive pornography can stick to ABSPO. Those who do not, will
enjoy finding ABIU.
And if a couple of guys (only a couple) over in rec.scuba want to
refer to us ABIU-ers as pervs and fags, so what? They aren't saying it
here in ABIU, so forget about it.
I will (as ABIU's creator and Admin, *and* a PADI-certified diver)
go post the a.b.i.u. FAQ in rec.scuba, and invite people there to drop
by our newsgroup for a look. Who knows?... perhaps some of the divers
there are perverts too and have a few tasteful, artistic UW nude images
in their photo collections. <smile>
Regards to all,
J.R.
