Hello! I just compleated my Ordeal this month, and have a question. At
formal events, such as a Court of Honor, how does one wear the sash?
Most boys I've seen wear them under their belt beacase the merit badge
sash is where the sash officially goes, however one of the men in my
troop said that in this circimstance, you just don't wear the OA sash.
Does anyone have the answer? If so, please e-mail me an answer at my
account because I don't check the newsgroups too often.

P.S. If anyone from National sees this, I'd really appreciate your
response. That way, I can share it with the rest of the rec.scouting

Unless you are at an OA function, or acting on behalf of the OA, you do not wear the
sash. You wear the OA Lodge Flap to show your membership.

They are wrong. It specifically is NOT to be worn under the belt.

He's right.

The National Office will NOT respond to usenet or e-mail as an official policy. They
may be reading, but they won't identify themselves or respond.

Hi Tim! Congrats on your Ordeal, and here's to a long life of cheerful
service.

Hopefully your lodge gave you an OA handbook. If you read it, you'll see
that the sash is meant to be worn over the right shoulder, and should be
worn to all OA events, or during times when you are recognized for
rendering special service. The OA Handbook goes on to say that the sash
shouldn't be worn under the belt.

In a case like a troop court of honor, you should make a choice -- merit
badge sash, or OA sash. It's really up to you. No matter which one you
choose, ytou should pick one, and wear only that one in the correct
manner. You should "dress up" for Courts of Honor, but you don't need to
display every patch, medal, or sash.

Personal bias -- I prefer the OA sash. maybe it was just my sewing job,
but my merit badge sash always looked gangly, and the OA sahs, if clean
and neatly ironed, is a nice distinctive addition to the uniform. But
the choice is up to you :)

I have been told by my lodge Chief that the sash should be worn only at
OA functions. This does not include CoH's. I personally wear the sash
on my belt at CoH's, even my Eagle, to show that I am a Brotherhood
member, but the flap on my shirt allready says I am a member.

Hi Timothy,
I wear mine just the opposite of how your friends wear theirs. I
have my merit badge sash tucked under my belt, and wear the OA sash
properly. I think the OA sash has more "priority" on the uniform at
formal Scouting events than the merit badge sash.

I have never seen someone wear the merit badge sash on their belt,
though I have seen the OA sash worn there incorrectly. And I haven't
ever heard of more "priority" for the OA sash. Recall that the
primary responsibility of an Arrowman to to serve his troop, and the
Order second.

From the OA Handbook (1991 printing), pages 31-32:

"An Arrowman's primary responsibility is to his troop, team, or post...."

"... your first duty as an Arrowman is to continue to expand your
service to your unit...."

At a court of honor, you want to be an example to the younger Scouts.
We often invite Webelos to attend our courts. Wear your merit badge
sash proudly and some younger Scouts or Webelos may be inspired to
follow your lead. If you downplay your merit badge achievements to
the point of not even wearing that sash, that lowers their significance
in the eyes of the younger Scouts.

Brian,

I am something of an old-timer, having been elected to the OA in the early
1960's. When I was a Scout, the OA sash was never worn except at OA
functions. For courts of honor, etc., the merit badge sash was worn. My
membership in the OA was evidenced by the patch or the little ribbon with
an arrow suspended from the right pocket button. We didn't wear anything
over our belts excpet the old style field cap. My advice is to keep the OA
regalia for OA events.

I pretty much agree with everything Branden said except the
last. When I was a youth I wore the OA sash when I was
acting as an Arrowman (OA events, elections etc). At a troop
court of honor you are more in the troop member mode and
the even is to honor advancement and other troop achievements.
As this includes merit badges it seems the merit badge sash
is more appropriate.

Hello again! I grateful for the amazing response I recieved. I plan
to tell the rest of the boys of the troop! I am certainly not going to
wear the sash on the belt, now that I know that it is incorrect. Thanks

replied via E-mail,

Well, technically, your lodge chief is wrong because the handbook
specifically lists CoH's as an appropriate place to wear the sash.
However, I agree with him that unless you have OA purpose at the CoH I
prefer that it not be worn.

However, your wearing of the sash on your belt is definitely not an
approved method of wearing the sash. The sash is either on your shoulder
or in your pocket, never on your belt. If you feel it is important for
people to know at the CoH that you are a BH member, then you should wear
the OA sash INSTEAD of the MB sash. Otherwise, don't wear the OA sash at
all.

We are supposed to set the example, in uniforming as well.

Hi Tim!

The OA sash is allowed to be worn during Courts of Honor, but if you
wear both sashes together, not many people will see you merit badges.
The OA sash is designed to be worn ON TOP of the merit badge sash.

The OA sash isn't supposed to be worn on the belt or under the belt...
that's just something that someone started and has been "maintained"
because of "tradition".

I'll send you a copy of the posting, but you really should stick around
for all of the answers to your question posted here.

The O.A. sash is ALWAYS worn over the right shoulder. It
is NOT worn on the belt. I do not have the O.A. Guide for
Officers and Advisors with me, but I will try to post a

You MAY NOT wear the sash under the belt, it is over the right
shoulder or NOTHING!!! The MB sash can be worn over the belt, though
that is not an official policy, just one that is not forbidden as is
wearing the OA sash over the belt. This is what we have our Scouts do,
as they as justifiably proud of both, but the sash takes precedence
for use of the shoulder! If there's a conflict, just don't wear the OA
sash to troop functions, save it for other special occasions (though
it _is_ perfectly OK to wear it at Troop Courts of Honor (and our
Scouts do it regularly).

It is not forbidden to wear the sash at CoH, but is proper to wear only at OA
functions, including unit elections. The pocket flap is worn to show you as
an Arrowman all the time.

Yes, under the belt is improper, but we've all done it. Probably started by
a GI since that is how you used to wear the garrison cap indoors.

This is incorrect. An Order of the Arrow sash may be worn at Courts
of Honor. Neither the OA sash nor the merit badge sash may be worn on
the belt. Therefore, it is up to the scout to decide which he would
like to wear.

"The Order of the Arrow sash is worn with official "Class A" uniform or
Scouting's official adult dress wear (a blue blazer and grey slaks). The
sash also may be worn by elangomats who are not in "Class A" uniform at an
ordeal, youth wearing ceremonial attire, and in such other instances as
approved by the Scout Executive. The sash is worn over the right shoulder
and, if in "Class A" uniform, under the shoulder loop (or epaulet) so that
the arrow is pointing over the right shoulder. The sash is worn diagonally
across the chest. It is not to be worn in any other manner."

"The sash is worn at Order of the Arrow functions and special Scouting
activites, when members need to be identified as Arrowmen rendering
special services"

Order of the Arrow Handbook, 1995 Printing pages 59-60.

The word from National, in the form of the OA handbook makes it quite
clear that the OA sash is only to be worn over the shoulder. Although it
is said in less concrete terms, wearing the sash is appropriate at a court
of honor, as it is a "special Scouting activity". Personally, I wore my
merit badge sash at courts of honor until I became a Chapter Chief. Now,
after serving five years on our Lodge's Executive Board, I find that I am
representing the Order at any formal function as a duty of my office, so I
always at least bring my sash with me to all scouting functions, if I do
not wear it through the entire function.
