Hello!

classb.com is planning on developing some more free software for scouting
units. Our next project is software to assist the Troop Librarian with
tracking the materials and who has them. The solution we develop will be
available for Windows or Macintosh and will be downloadable at no charge.

In order for the software to be as effective as possible, I would like to
enlist some members of the group to act as beta-testers and also to
provide the basic input of what the software should do. While we may not
be able to do everything for everybody, Gregg and I ( we're the software
guys) will work with our volunteers to try and make the most useful
"Librarian Assistant" that we can.

If you are interested, please send me an email - OFF LIST - and I will
put you on our mailing list. It should involve answering about 4-6 sets
of questions and some "try and break it" type testing.

Thanks in Advance for your help!

Open the source, too. Might see a Linux version of it ported later, or
get random geek Scout(er)s adding features and bugfixes. Only with the
source is it truly Free.

I'd help, but I don't run either system.

Since most of my Scouting experience is on the unit level and was
pre-ScoutNET, I don't know that much about ScoutNET. Please excuse these
basic questions:

1. What is ScoutNET?

2. Where are its developers specifications published?

3. Who is the point of contact for third party developers interested in
supporting ScoutNET in their applications?

Thanks for any information you can provide. I've heard a lot of comments
about ScoutNET from different council's staff members but never any
technical details.

This is an open inquiry for anyone on the group with additional
information to provide.

What is ScoutNet?
ScoutNET is a state-of-the-art computer network use to link the
hundreds of Boy Scout councils together with the Boy Scouts of America
national headquarters. It has redefined the way councils communicate, and
has closed the geographical gap, allowing real-time information transfer.

What Does ScoutNet Do For You and Your Unit?
ScoutNET changed you from a number to a name. You are now identified
in ScoutNet with your name. ScoutNET allows you to communicate with your
council professionals via e-mail. ScoutNET allows your council office to
accept electronic files and computer generated reports created with the Unit
Management Software your unit uses to manage your troop, pack, crew, or
team. Software such as TroopMaster or PackMaster.

Council email addresses available upon request by phone or email.
Please provide the appropriate Council staff person you are trying to reach.

What Does ScoutNet Do for Your Council?
ScoutNET gives our professional employees at the council off immediate
real-time access to Scout records. ScoutNET provides e-mail service for all
employees of our council. ScoutNET provides immediate flash bulletins from
the national office to each council office. ScoutNET eliminated the poor
print quality of the old FAX server system and replaced it with online
access to PDF documents stored at the national office. By going to the
online library they can download any document in the library. ScoutNET
provides real-time access to the council financial records and reports.

What Software is Compatible with ScoutNet?
TroopMaster by TroopMaster Software Inc.

PackMaster by TroopMaster Software Inc.

Rank N File by Hart C Enterprise

ScoutMate by Scoutmate

Scoutsoft by SBF Publication Co. Inc.

Thanks for your response Thomas! That is some great background
information that clears up a lot of what ScoutNET is all about.

I'm still trying to find the answers to my other two questions:

2. Where are its developers specifications published?

3. Who is the point of contact for third party developers
interested in supporting ScoutNET in their applications?

So far, it looks like the sn2k.org website has been taken down and I
can't find any official sites to provide greater information. Perhaps
there is no additional information? If anyone knows this search is
futile, please let me know.
