New NNTP server? FWIW external-september has been great. Not a bump that
I can tell.

Actually, DSL. ATT said they are discontinuing present service in 2010,
and can switch folks to a different plan. Not a clue what that means,
but "stay tuned" to e-mail announcements. Turned out our local telephone
company's low-speed DSL (256k) is only a few dollars more per month than
dialup. I haven't figured out a decent e-mail pgm on vista laptop.

I was going to do TV also since the bundle isn't that expensive for
broadcast channels, BUT they have to install - about $100, iirc, one
time - since tv and computer are more than 10ft away (different floors,
actually). And if I wanted to get anything other than regular broadcast
channels, it's another $25/month above the cheap bundle. If I were ready
to retire to a rocking chair and watch tv all day, it might be worth it,
but I'm not there yet and can't see in spending $25/month to watch a
couple Natl Geographic or Discovery or whatever each month. There's
only about 3 channels on that humongous list that I think I'd ever watch.

So I'm getting NBC and CBS off the translator towers (analog). I did
finally manage to get the digital box hooked up without complete static
- but still watching analog. When I switch to digital, there's a really
weak signal, at best. I've been told that digital reception is really
patchy where I am because of mountains and transmitting positions. Right
now with cold, stable air, I get decent analog reception, but that's
likely to change when it warms and the winds pick up.

If you looking for a all-in-one jobby, I highly recommend Opera:
http://www.opera.com/browser/

It's a browser, e-mail, newsgroup all-in-one, very robust feature set.
Having a tech background I always used in the past Firefox and
Thunderbird, but I really dislike Thunderbird as an e-mail/newsgroup
client. With Opera everything is right in your face and accessible
through one interface. The built in e-mail client is very robust and has
a lot of features built in that are absent from Thunderbird without
installing a bunch of extensions. One feature I rather like about Opera
newsgroups client is that you can actually delete newsgroup spam from view
which is nice, setting up filters is a lot more straight forward as well.
It also has built in link syncing, which basically means if you have more
then one computer in your house all you have do is type in your account
and all your history, bookmarks, etc, are all synced between computers so
you only have to maintain one bookmark set and of course you can import
all your. Again most of the functionality w/ Opera can be mimicked in
Firefox w/ extensions, but w/ Opera it's all built in and straight
forward. I like it because it just makes sense to have all that Internet
related crap in one program. Anyway, check out the link, very high
quality feature set and makes things easier from my POV.

The mail/newsgroup search feature is spectacular also. I've used it many
many times to refer back to old posts, you just type and it filters out
messages live.

I've been using Outlook Express for years with only an ocasional burp,
but I'm on desktop with XP.
I'm not sure why you care what your operating system is for a mailer?

No WiFi on your laptop? You can get a wirelss router for maybe $25 and
problem solved. Just set up my grand daugther since we got her her a
laptop. Trivial setup.

Thanks. I started looking at this last night, but after using Eudora for
20 yrs, I'm finding the Opera interface to be really busy looking -
probably because it is everything in one. But I've got some connections
working in it (and they configured really quickly) and not in other
pgms, but not all features working in Opera. I'll look at it some more.

I've used Eudora for about 20yrs, but they ceased support / new
versions a few years ago - much like my favorite PIM. There's a new open
source version modelled after Thunderbird, but the beta looks like
thunderbird with Eudora logo. I'm not sure my desktop version (upgrades
to upgrades and not sure if I've got the original) will work under
vista. I did try an in-between version, and I've got that partly working.

Because I'm not sure that older programs work under newer operating
systems, given Bill's planned obsolescence for anything non-M$. When I
got my laptop, I didn't see any options to get XP rather than vista -
would've taken it if I'd seen it.

Yes, but that wouldn't help the present desktop, which might be on verge
of getting replaced (5.5 yr old). Might need to take this to e-mail.
