I have not run now for two years because of arthritis in my lower back. My back
pain seems to be about constant with mornings being the worst. Are any of you
runners out there suffering from arthritis of the lower back and just toughing
it out. If I start again it will be with the best of shoes and on grass or
sand. Thanks, Don

I know how lower back pain can be, but not caused from arthritis. I
injured my back about 5 years ago at work and was in almost constant
pain up until last year until I started running again. The pain has
almost dissapeared (99.9%). Motorcycling is also one of my hobbies
and before after a couple hours in the saddle my lower back would be
killing me... now, the pain has pretty much disappeared, which makes
riding so much better.

I know that our conditions are different, but I just wanted to share
my experience with lower back pain in general. I hope you find a
solution.

Yes, toughing it out despite lower back pain, which comes and goes; always
there but worse some days. I can really feel it when I stand upright and lean
backwards. Have tried various exercise regimes, chiropractic treatment
(temporary relief) different sleeping posture, etc. but nothing really seems to
help. Physician seems to think that there is no disk damage - not that I would
lightly submit to surgery in any event...

Oddly enough, the pain is not present when I run (except an occasional jolt
when I twist my torso) but I can't stand still for10 minutes before discomfort
sets in.

I have had chronic lower back pain for 3 years, due to some accidents
(trying to play ultimate frisbee going backwards) and foolishness (lifting
railroad ties) when I was younger. When I followed my doctor's advice and
"just rested" I had back pain every day. When I chucked that and went back
to running, my back pain went away. Nowadays, if I take more than a couple
days off from running, it pops up again. So I just try to keep running. My
2c.

For each of us like Brad, Bert, and Victor who just sort of tough it out or find
running helps us deal with chronic back pain, there are probably the same number
who experience worse symptoms. It's an individual thing.

Be careful and try to isolate activities/factors that help and hurt. Then do the
ones that help and avoid the ones that hurt. <g>

I was also suffering from arthritis and I recovered from it through chiropractic treatment at http://myhhchiro.com. Now I am running daily without any back pain. You can also consult a chiropractor in your area.

Hi,

I see you must be new to newsgroups. You replied to a discussion that ended in 1998. Anyway you comment is still good. You resurrected this thread.

A chiropractor can be the right choice for the right injury. One helped clear up a hip problem I once had. The sciatic pain hasn't come back.

Enjoy the run.

This an ancient thread. And I've only read the first posting. This guy should have considered and experimented with MSM, refined vegetable oil restriction, lowered arachidonic acid intake, tried high dose boswellia, tried MSM, tried quercetin, and do all of the above all at the same bloody time. And tried both a conventional doc and a Life-extension Doc plus some other alt care providers.

Nuts, I missed the importance of core exercises for the lower back.
Posture during running is also important.
