It tastes awful, but the moment it hits the stomach it neutralizes
everything. The only side effects are gigantic belches in the following
few minutes.
I did this before my run again just yesterday, and had no stomach problems
at all.

What is the dosage/frequency of the Prilosec ?
If you are on one of the lower doses, and increase may be advisable. For
acute exacerbations, an increase in the frequency to twice a day for a
period of up to four weeks can be tried.
One of the most important factors with the Prilosec is that it MUST be
taken consistently every day to maintain the protective effects on the
mucosal lining.
Have you tried adding H2 blockers such as Zantac or Tagamet on days that you
are running? . They can be used with Prilosec as the mechanism of action is
different.
What foods are you eating before a race? There is a whole list of foods that
contribute to GERD by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing the
acid to relux into the esophagus. Chief among these are peppermint and
peppermint flavorings, caffeine products and all carbonated beverages.
Certain other medications are prone to relaxing the LES. I will be happy to
e-mail you a list of food and drugs if you would like.
