On Sunday a woke up with much pain in the muscles along side of my
shins. Is this condition shin splints or just muscle soreness? I
have never experienced shin pain with my other shoes.
Has anyone else ever had new shoes give them shin splints? Is
this just a matter of me getting used to the shoe?
I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.
What is the reputation of the Nike Air Max? Has this shoe caused
anyone problems?
Thanks,
Dan

I love my Nike Air Max.......wouldn't trade them in for something else.
Perhaps it was just the change........a change to *any* shoe may have
introduced your problem.
Just a thought.

It may be that cushioning is not your problem. Are you a pronator? Do
you need rear foot stability or motion control.
Find out the characteristics of your Asics shoes. I doubt they were
cushioning.
You may have purchased shoes that were not made for your feets characteristics.

Funny, same thing happened to me when I bought my Air Max. Must be the
heel is longer or something. BTW it goes away only after about a
month. G'Luck.
It probably is your shoes. The shoes that you bought were probably
not meant for your feet, or should I say your running mechanics. They
would probably work fine for someone else.
If you have a pronating running style, you should buy a shoe designed
for that. If you have a supinating running style, you should buy a shoe
designed for that. Would you buy a shoe designed for tennis to bowl
in, I doubt, but that's analogous to what you did. The Nike Air Max is
not a bad shoe, it's just the wrong type of shoe.
Go to a show store and tell them you need to buy a new pair of running
shoes and tell them that you don't know if you are a pronator or a
supinator. If they don't know what you're talking about or if
they don't ask you to jog to the other end of the store
while they watch you from behind, take your business to another
store where they have running experts. They probably means you
won't be shopping at a mall or at the discount stores. Be prepared
to pay full price. It worth it to find the right shoe.
I learned this all the hard way myself. I had shin splints so bad that
I could hardly walk. I had been running for 15 years, and had to lay
off for 9-12 months due to an injury. When I started back up, I bought
some new shoes and got shin splints worse than when I first stared
running.
Dan:
I've run in Nike Skylons for several years with no problems and switched to the
Asics Gel Trainer on advice of the staff in the running shoe store. (They did
not sell Nike!). The new shoes felt great and I was feeling good until about a
month later when the dreaded shin splints hit. Took me out for about 2 1/2
months and was really frustrating. Dr. Pributs running page had more and better
information than either my regular MD or the Orthopedic specialist he sent me
to.
Have switched back to the Nike Skylons now and am not having any problems. The
lesson seems to be that what works works and what doesn't work doesn't work. I
don't think the shin splints are the result of shoe softness because the Asics
were plenty soft. I think it has to do with the total of support and cushioning
and if we change either of these parameters by changing to a new brand we need
to revert to the 10% rule. Otherwise, it'll get you.
Just my $0000.02
Ed
Years ago, I tried Nike Airs with the same shin splints problem. I've
never bought anything from Nike since. It seems that the quality of
their shoes haven't improved with their cost...
