I'm did a little hunting around and found these:
http://groups.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=46452
http://groups.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=46453
http://groups.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=87593
I think because this is a Usenet vs. a normal Google Group we'd have a
hard time finding a way to delete spam.
This one says to contact the author directly. Doug already (kind of)
did, to no avail.

This one says to says report spam. Might be the most relevant option.

This one says they don't support killfiles.

Unfortunately, these don't really solve Doug's problems. For those using
the Google Groups interface, they could continue to report spam and hope
that eventually such posts get banned/removed.
The alternative is to use a news reader such as Thunderbird where you
can create filters. They still show up but show up marked as read.
I wish people were a bit considerate and not continue to spam inspite of
repeated requests.

Don't hold your breath; if they were considerate, they wouldn't spam in the
first place.

Twit knows she is pissing us off but doesn't care. I'm sending her an
STD Xmas present.

Spam does not have a real definition. In the case of Twit her stuff is
simply off topic.

Bingo and what I found from a quick look. There are some apps out
there but they are a PITA. The cure is worse than the problem.

I've gone through about 3-4 NNTP servers in the last year and they all
kind of suck. Google is tolerable but I was looking for something like
delete thread.

About the same chance as having peace throughout the world.
Thanks, I'll just ignore the trash.

Have you tried http://www.individual.net/?
Very reliable and they filter out much of the spam. Not free but not
expensive either.

Have you tried eternal-septemeber.org?
Oh I see, you're talking about the threads which start with "~ *"
I can testify that at least for some of us, those threads become
"invisible" through habitually ignoring them. So much so that I had
no idea who or what you were talking about until you got more
specific. Was trying to puzzle out who was getting under your skin -
Dizzy? The occasional blogger?
I literally forgot those posters and threads were still there, though
clearly they must've been in the thread menu every day. Isn't it just
as easy to avoid clicking on them as it is to refrain from checking
out "hoodies on sale" or "new Dallas Cowboys blog"?
My observation with the recent change to Google groups (being able to
click "report as spam"): either a post disappears quickly, or it never
goes away. I would love to know their criteria--maybe a certain
number of clicks to hit "critical mass" but if someone posts before
the spam reaches that point, it is untouchable? It might be that if
someone responds to the spam it won't be deleted. And, I just thought
of this, maybe they only delete stuff that originates from a gmail
account?
As Michelle mentioned you can subscribe for free at:
http://www.eternal-september.org/
They do a pretty good job of filtering spam.
Using a new reader client such as OE or Thunderbird you can block senders
they don't filter. I used to use a add on for Firefox called Grease Monkey
to block senders when using the Google web interface.
Thanks for that Michelle.
Just one but not only "~ *"

Nah, no particular individual least of all Ditzy. There have been very
few individuals that ever drove me to set up a killfile.

At least with OE I can mark a thread as read and all read stuff goes
away.
When I get a minute I'll try eternal-september although it sounds
more like a religious revival group. ;)

Thanks for hint on external

The service used to be motzarella.org, but for some sort of legal reason,
it had to relinquish that name, although www.motzarella.org redirects to
www.eternalseptember.org.

I only eat spam sandwches on the weekend, specifically Sunday.
A motzarella sandwhich would be nice ~ !

For the long-time USENET denizens, September was when the influx of
freshman college students discovered their school's USENET connection and
descended on the newsgroups.
When AOL first introduced USENET access, the flood of their clueless
customers in the newsgroups made it like September year round.

The free news server at eternal-september.org is exceptionally well
maintained, although a bit sluggish at times.

True but now kids opf 3-5 years old are playing on computers and USENET
isn't even on their plate. It's myspace, facebook. Blogs......

I'm using it and so far so good.

Just enough to keep your mind warped and keep sending this shit. At
least I can now delete your asinine cross-post musings although I'd like
to offer you a size 13 in your posterior for being a dork!

Did she ever say why she stopped running?
Probably bit by a homeless person pissed off with her not minding her
own business! ;)

I've been using it ok since about the time motzarella changed to that
that name. I had just barely set motzarella up, when the announced the
change.
I'm using Thunderbird to read it.
New version of Eudora is built over Thunderbird, and I really don't care
for it. Plus I haven't been able to get at&t to work with it, but I may
not have tried long enough. Other things to do besides that - like enjoy
the 0F and sunny skies to run in.
Dot
I use outlook express for my mail and now with external-september I'm
back to doing newsgroups under OE. A single entry point and not need
any browser for most of my quick checks.
In addition I can easily mark a thread read and all read threads
disappear with a refresh. Killfiles are easy for the few times I have
needed them.
I'm back to being comfortable unless the NNTP misbehaves.

Google is an archive of the newsgroups. So once it gets posted, it
kind of just is there forever.

Unless you have a no archive header.
