Hi, Bill here once again. I'm not sure how long it has been since my
last update, but I'm almost certain it was before this past Winter. As
I recall, I left off asking about the delayed chills after cycling and
eventually stopped for the remainder of the Winter. Then I started up
with allergies for the first time in years in Dec, 2012 and they
continued to be a nuisance until the change to warmer weather. I guess
the only good news out of all of this was that I only gained 10 lbs
despite having pretty much 0 exercise throughout the Winter.

Six weeks ago, rather than haul out the bicycle, I decided to try and
find the right walking shoes one last time. As you'll recall, I had
nothing but blister problems when I tried speed walking last year
despite many trips to the running store. This time I decided to go with
my gut and proceeded to Dick's Sporting Goods with the purpose of
spending hours trying on various running shoes and then hopefully
finally choosing one. The Dick's people, even though knowing next to
nothing about shoes, still were very helpful bringing out the dozen
boxes of shoes I tried on. I didn't care if they didn't know about
shoes because everyone over the last seven years thought they knew
enough to pick the correct shoes for me.... WRONG! Read on....

After 3 hours, I finally picked one pair with the agreement that I could
bring them back if they weren't right. They agreed as long as I didn't
bring them back dirty or worn.

This first pair was just 1 size smaller than the 11's I have been
wearing (size 10) and standard instead of extra wide width. I also
purchased and used a Superfeet insert. I felt they were ok, but I
returned them for a size 9, standard width the next day. Size 9's were
a mistake, way too tight and my feet were numb after wearing them.
So,after two returns, I settled on 10.5 standard width.

That was 6 weeks ago. Since then I have been able to pretty much walk
as fast or as slow as I want with up to 6.5 mi duration. First time
I've been able to do this in 7 years. Initially, I had some back of the
heel blisters, but I have been covering that area with duck tape and it
seemed to stop them.

Now, finally, after years, I'm back to my favorite aerobic activity and
not constantly worrying about blistering. I can sense that one might
develop on the bottom of one foot when I walk past 5 miles, but so far
it hasn't. I may eventually just rub some of that anti-chaffing gel
across that area, but so far I've just been monitoring the area carefully.

These shoes are a much better fit and tight, but not so tight that my
feet are numbing. I'm still using runner's socks and of course the
insert as I said.

This Winter I got to thinking about when I started having blistering
problems and it was after I switched from tight sneakers to my first
pair of running shoes, fitted by the runners at the running shoe store.
Obviously for me, this was not the course of action I should have
chosen and picked out my own pair instead. I don't fault the stores (I
visited 3 running shoe stores over the last 7 years trying to iron out
this blister problem) as I think they look at fitting exclusively from a
running perspective, which of course has different stress and rubbing
than walking. However, I couldn't be more thrilled to be able to walk
again.

I'll keep the bike as a stand-by and may end up alternating walking some
days with the bike, but now that I can walk again, walking will be my
primary activity.

Thanks again to all those who tried to help me solve the blistering
issues last year. It was appreciated and may have played a part in the
decision making process to "go on my own intuition".

That's a great report Bill.

It's a reminder to get shoes fit for the activity and that your foot is always the same size, but the same shoe size might not be the same across brands and models.

BTW Bill, I don't recall but, did you ever try sandals or try going barefoot?

After going through all that, and if the new shoes are indeed "successful",
did you get another pair or two of the same thing (+ Superfeet inserts) --
both so you can alternate wearings and so they last you longer before you
need to go through the same agonizing process again?

That's what I do, anyway.

I hate shoe-shopping (of any sort) because it's so hard to find something
that fits decently. When I find something that works, I get a
backup/alternate.

That's a good point and has been in my plans from the beginning. I just
wanted to spend a few weeks just to make sure these were the ones first.
Last year, the shoes I had almost seemed ideal until the temperatures
warmed and the blisters appeared. This year, luckily that hasn't
happened so I'm about to pick up another pair or two.

Although I'm not married, I can imagine spending the same time and
effort finding a suitable woman. I just hope that if the day ever
comes, I don't have to go through the agony I did last year with the
poorly fitting shoes.... or find out 5 years down the road that "she"
wasn't the right fit either. Problem would be that I couldn't take her
back to the store if things didn't go right, unlike shoes!

I think the main problem was that there was simply too much wiggle room
inside the shoes. They were comfortable enough to walk around the house
or a slow walk around the store, but the minute I started speed walking
in them, my feet would flop around inside like a car on a frozen road.
The guys/ gals at the stores just couldn't pick this up I guess,
although they were quite good at setting up my feet with the proper
support.

A neighbor suggested barefoot. I haven't done that, but I did wear flip
flops one time. Pretty decent speeds, but the lack of support caused
some foot/ knee pain. I'm sort of heavy set so need the extra arch and
cushioning support.

...

Of course doing anything is better than not doing anything.

If one is still struggling with weight and one is not able to "run" I
would seriously recommend doing some swimming to go along with the
wallking. Walking while better than nothing just generally does not
produce significant workload in my experience.

Good luck!

I agree, if one is walking at a leisurely rate. However, I move nearly
as fast as many joggers with walking, so it can be quite challenging to
maintain the pace for the 4.5-7 mile walks. I have in the past lost
over 80 lbs through regular fast walking alone and have already lost 3
lbs of the 10 lbs I gained this winter when I wasn't doing anything.

I haven't been able to actually run for over 10 years. Even with the
best shoes, I kept doing something to either my legs, hip or both, so
now I use the running shoes for walking. The greatest benefit I have
with the running shoes is support/ stability. I suppose if I weighed my
"ideal weight" according to the "doctor's scale", I could probably jog,
but that I haven't weighed that since I was about 14. Even at my best
weight today, still appearing quite slender to most people and even my
doctor, I'm actually still overweight by about 20 lbs I'd say. At that
weight, with blood pressure and cholesterol in check, the doctor doesn't
complain so I don't either.

Bill
