Do NOT waste your money at Hersheypark! Although I haven't been theree yet I
know of at least 2 source who said that the park has RUINED their Comet with
TWO trim brakes elinimating ALL airtime after the turn above the station!! I
don't care how good the Wildcat is!! It is only a matter of time that it will
get ruined with brakes like the Sooperdooperlooper and the once a good ride
Comet NOW RUINED BY THEME PARK MENTALITY!! I DON"T TRUST THEIR MANAGEMENT TO
RUN THINGS RIGHT AFTER PULLING THAT CRAP!! I don't mean to be an asshole but
this USED to be a traditional park! This would be expected at a Paramount or
Six Flags park NOT an old park!!

Down with TPM!!!

Actually, while I agree with you that the Comet's brakes have greatly lessened
the thrill of the ride, and should not be in use, they have been in use for
some years now. I don't recall the year they were activated (they were always
present), but I'd guess they've been used for about 10 years or so. At one
time the Comet was my favorite; I've since ridden better coasters. Even
without the brake, the Comet would not be my #1 any longer. But it would
certainly rate higher than it currently does. I don't know that the brake on
the Comet (it's a skid brake - not 2 separate brakes) is a fortelling of things
to come on the Wildcat. Fact is, the Wildcat is now 3 yrs old and has no
brake. I think they rebuilt the Comet some years back, and decided to spare
further maintenance by using the brake, thereby reducing wear and tear on the
out and back section. Of course, they also reduced any airtime and any fun on
that section, so the ride is only a shadow of what it could be. As I said,
though, this is nothing new. And as for Paramount, PKD has no trim brakes on
any wooden coaster. So.....
I personally have indicated in writings to them how very much I like the
Wildcat, and how unhappy I am w/ the brake on the Comet. As is, I go there,
ride the Comet once, and go on to better things.

I've got a great solution for you... STAY OFF THE COMET! It'll make the line
shorter for me and my little girl (we love it, trim brakes and all...)

The brakes on Comet stink real bad and the out and back section would KICK
without them but this is no reason to boycott the park! Wildcat and the
carousel and many other aspects make Hersheypark one of the most enjoyable
"theme parks" in the country! Oh, the brakes have been there for a LONG time,
at least 82 when I rode it first. My on ride video in 82 clearly shows the
brakes although I don't recall a significant slowdown at that point. I do
remember complaints at the 84 (?) ACE conv. about the brakes, however.
Happy Coasting!

What the hell are you talking about??? I rode the Comet last week and
even though t trims were on, the ride was still great! Tell your
'sources' that the ride is not ruined. Better yet, YOU go to the park
and ride the thing before you 'boycott' the ride. Jeeze! If you want
air, go ride Shivering Timbers, which by the way, DOES ride like a
wooden coaster. ( sorry folks, you had to be there for that last one).

realize that the other coasters at Hershey are great also even though
some are STEEL) Flaharty

Not true. Just rode it a week ago, plenty of airtime in the front seat.
Didn't notice any brake runs at all except at the end. One of my
favorite woodies.

Maybe you were lucky. The brakes are almost always on. They're on the second
180 turn. And they REALLY eliminate any airtime whatsoever.

The Convention was in 1982, and yes, there were some people who whined about
the brakes over the station. It seems that the real issue here, is not the
brakes, but a person suggesting we boycott a park when he has not even been
there. On top of that, the fun Comet is one of 6 coasters in the park,
including a classic Schwarzkopf looper, with no OTS.

I wrote a letter to Hersheypark regarding the brake on the comet, and they said
that it was necessary for safety and maintenance reasons (to prevent
unnecessary wear and tear on the ride, among other things). It does make the
ride less enjoyable, but the part up until then is awesome. The part after the
brake is less awesome than it used to be (after the first two big drops), but
it is still fun. I want the brake to be gone, but it being there will not
prevent me from riding the Comet or going to Hersheypark. It is a great park,
and they have a lot of great roller coasters there. I have new respect for the
Comet and its second turnaround brake after riding Hercules at Dorney Park.
They have a brake GOING DOWN THE FIRST HILL (among other places). That ride
was going so slow that all three of us who were there were seriously wondering
if the train was going to complete its circuit. It was going that slow. I
thought that it was going to stop enroute. Hercules used to be an awesome
ride. Now it sucks. We didn't get back on it at all that day or night, and I
really can't see any good reason to ever get on it ever again. I am addicted
to roller coasters, and I have never said something like that about a roller
coaster before in my life, so you know that is a pretty strong statement.

Your poat made me laugh! ust because they added an extra break to one ride,
does NOT give you a good reason to Boycott a Park! It was probally done for
safty. Boycottign a Park over one break is kinda stupid ans sillY!, Don't you
think?
