Man jumps from Stratosphere Tower

By Joe Schoenmann
Review-Journal

A 24-year-old Utah man took six seconds to scale
two metal fences, then jumped to his death from the
observation deck of the 1,149-foot Stratosphere Tower
Wednesday night.

Tom Willer, Stratosphere vice president of
marketing, said Mitchell M. Mayfield of Tooele set off
an alarm before jumping. But he moved so quickly a
security guard on the observation deck was unable to
get to him, even in time to see him jump.

"The guard was on the other side of the deck and he
ran to the scene," said Willer. "But by the time he got
there, he was already gone."

Mayfield is the first person to commit suicide by
jumping from the top of the Las Vegas landmark since
its opening in 1996, Willer said. Three others before him
have been talked out of jumping, and five people have
jumped wearing parachutes.

Willer said Mayfield's body bounced off the
glass-enclosed observation area that juts out beneath the
deck. Then, just before hitting the ground, he hit part of
the roof covering the valet parking area. His body
landed in bushes about 30 feet from workers.

Willer said Mayfield was staying at New York-New
York on the south end of the Strip. Mayfield may have
been having difficulties in a relationship, Willer said.

Las Vegas police found the car Mayfield was driving
in the Stratosphere parking garage, said homicide Lt.
Wayne Petersen. The car was registered to a Utah
woman who police believe was his girlfriend.

Willer said surveillance video shows how Mayfield
climbed two fences that act as a barrier to anyone trying
to jump off the observation deck. The first fence is about
five feet higher than the observation deck. Mayfield
climbed this, Willer said, then jumped down to a
walkway that is three feet below the observation deck.
That's when an alarm sounded, drawing the attention of
a security guard.

The guard didn't get there before Mayfield had
scaled the last barrier, a 10-foot high fence.

"He did all of this in about six seconds," Willer said.

Willer doubted the tower would change its security
procedures.

"This gentleman was unwavering in his resolve to
end his life quickly, he said. "And in those cases, no
matter where you are, it is very difficult to prevent
somebody from taking their life."

Fist of all, it sounds like the press release was writting by a person with a
good knowledge of facts and writting skills, but it doesn't sound real to me.
Something just doesn't add up. I didn't see or read about it either though.
Hmmmm.

Not that this terrible news item needs any editorial comment, but what a sad,

I live in Las Vegas, I don't remember hearing about this. Of course I
have been moving into a new house for the last 12 days, so who knows.
The Stratosphere could have fallen over and I probably wouldn't have
noticed.

I would assume that I would have heard SOMETHING since I have been
doing some work with the local PD at City Hall.

Mmmm. Oh well.

I did see a TV program where they were letting people bungie jump from the
top of The Stratosphere Tower. Maybe that is what they were reffering to.
Personally, I'll stick to Big Shot for thrills. Big Shot is heart pumping
enough.
