Slapping a support on MF?

Somewhere, I don't remember where, someone mentioned being able to slap a
support beam in one of the overbanked turns on MF if you stuck your hand out
the side.

Is/was this true? And did someone indeed slap it? That could easily break
someones hand or arm.

Not anymore. 8-)

As the train comes out of the first inversion, there is a track support
coming off of the big "tree" that holds up the first curve. I think it is
the second-to-the-last track support coming off of that tower. It was
possible for someone with very long arms to lean out to the right of the
train and tag that support.

In time for the 2001 season, the support was cut, reinforced on the bottom
side, and notched on top to insure that it is out of reach. It was only
within the reach envelope by a couple of inches, which means it's doubtful
that anybody could get enough limb into contact with it to do any serious
damage. But now it's outside the envelope.

Most of the other coasters at CP have various structural elements that are
closer to the rider than that support was. It's just that most of the
rides are built with the assumption that the riders are not trying to get
themselves hurt.

It was true, but no longer. Some idiot did reach down and hit a
support on the first curve, and was injured. I don't know if there
were broken bones, but probably. Shortly after that happened CP put a
notch in the support to keep it out of reach. You can see the notch
from the Frontier Trail, I think it is the third support on the
overbanked curve, the one just before the train starts dropping again.
During the off-season it appears they also raised the seats an inch or
two to keep it further out of reach.

I'm sure this can not happen. After Millennium Force was completed,
Intamin and Cedar Point did a pull through, with a the coaster car,
and a large board with long "fingers" on it, simulating someone trying
to touch a support. If they had found something, it would have been
corrected. I have pictures of the pull through train. Also, you are
right, at that speed, your bones would snap.

I hit my hand on the support Dave mentioned once in 2000. Like he also said,
it was flattened and you can no longer reach it.

A side note, I was not trying to hit it, I didn't even think I had my arm out
far at all. I don't even have long arms. But I hit it.

I also believe I heard that Joe Schwartz hit his hand as well in that spot.
True, Joe?

Just wondering, but did you do any damage to your hand? I saw somebody a few
months ago nearly break their hand on Gold Rusher at Six Flags Magic Mountain
when their hand slapped part of the parks Log Jammer flume ride. As we all know
Gold Rusher is not exactly the most wild ride out there either.

Nope, just stung on the fingertips for half the ride.

Yep, that's true. I was leaning way over, and my fingertips grazed the
suport. I'm glad to hear that they flattened that part of the support.

If I recall correctly, Mark McKenzie broke bones in his hand on
Knoebels Phoenix when he hit a wooden support for the shed over the
station brakes. Also watch out for the fiberglass rods on GASM at
SFGAdv. They are at the mid-course brake and brake run before the
station (Steve O'Donnell got whacked by these).

It's quite easy to hit supports on Wildcat at Cedar Point without trying
(ow).

That story reminds me that in Aug 2001, I was at Camp Snoopy, one time out of my
6 times on Buzzsaw rollercoaster, at near the end of the ride, happens
unexpectely, my left hand got slapped by one of the steel supports on the side
of the track, just brief pain to my fingertips so I yaned my hands inside since
I wasn't aware that my left hand got whacked near end of the ride :)

I really enjoys Camp Snoopy very much, it is only one of few indoor theme parks
:)

I suspect you hit a railing and not a support, actually. They are really
close on the left side as you enter the brakes.

Yup! that is the railing since I am partially blind but I did enjoyed the ride,
it is damn good and family sized rollercoaster that snakes around the park, I
personally think that going though the mountain where the flume ride is somewhat
too slow and tame, I wish they had it speeding though but oh well, they designed
that way :( but still good one :)

During PKI's August photo shoot, I unintentionally hit my hand on the

Same thing on the Santa Cruz Giant Dipper in the last fan turn and
through the pre-lift tunnel. It's also possible to slap supports on the
Disneyland Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and on GhostRider.

And I suppose you DO know me and can predict what I will do/have done?
(For the record, breaking my hand is not one of the things I like to do
on purpose.) Obviously you have never read any of my posts on this
newsgroup the past few years that expressed my viewpoints on legal
matters.

As I mentioned, it did happen to me. I was purposely leaning and reaching
toward the support, thinking that it was probably out of my reach. (In
case anyone is wondering, I certainly do NOT blame Intamin or Cedar Point
for my actions.)

I'll bet that when Cedar Point did the pull-through, the long "fingers"
simulated a rider reaching out his arms, but sitting upright in the seat.
Apparently, they didn't consider the extra reach of a rider who's leaning
far to one side. I'm only 5'8", and my arms aren't abnormally long, but I
can extend my reach an extra foot by leaning over.

Just furthers my opinion of you Schwartz. To do something that irresponsible is
an action that DESERVES for you to become badly injured. I for one am sorry
that you walked off the ride ok.

Then again- it's people's moronic actions like your own that cause rider
injury/death that the PARK is blamed for. You- who tries to promote yourself as
deserving so much respect- in one sentence just proved why you deserve NONE.
