They implied that the G-forces of the ride had something to do with
the teenagers passing out, but then they said that the teenagers were
passing out after holding their breath. They were doing this to get a
momentary "high" that comes from withholding oxygen from the brain.
The one teenager that they interviewed during the show said that he
realized how dangerous this was, and he stopped doing it. The other
teenager that they interviewed still does it, and his mom even drives
him to the local amusement park.
Even though roller coasters are not dangerous, some people think that
they are, and this does not help their public image. I was hoping
that Dr. Phil would come out and say that roller coasters are safe,
but he did not. The only thing he said was that by passing out on
purpose, the teenagers were missing out on the roller coaster ride (in
addition to putting themselves in danger).
I have not been to the web site yet, but there is apparently a
discussion regarding today's show at http://www.drphil.com/.
A quick trip to wiki also found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choking_game
It's called "thinning the herd".
kids have been doing this for decades, I recall kids doing something
like this in 4th grade recess when "I" was in school, and that was a
