Welcome to the world of Roller-Coaster fanaticism!
--------------------------------------------------

This article, and the two that follow it, make up the regular info
posting for rec.roller-coaster, the net's own asylum for coaster
fanatics. In this posting, you'll find everything (or, almost
everything) you need to know to be a coaster fanatic, too!

Enjoy your ride!!!!

--------

Changes from the last posting:

Well, there are really too many to list this time. Lots of
things have changed in the couple of months since I've changed
jobs, moved, and totally turned my life upside down.

Specific things you'll want to check out, though, due to major
changes, are the "Coming Attractions" and "Roller Coaster
Ratings" sections. There are also a few new definitions.

Some other things have changed as well, but it's been a couple
of months; you really wanted to reread the whole thing, didn't
you. ;^)

1. Newsgroup Charter -- rec.roller-coaster

rec.roller-coaster Roller coasters and other amusement park rides.

rec.roller-coaster is an unmoderated newsgroup which passed its vote for
creation by 184:72 as reported in news.announce.newsgroups on 21 July 1991.

This newsgroup is for the discussion of any amusement park rides,
including but not limited to, roller coasters. Other topics include park
operating times/season schedules, admission prices, latest attractions,
future expansion efforts, etc.

2. Usenet info

If you're new to Usenet, I'd really recommend reading the newsgroups
news.announce.newusers and news.newusers.questions for a while. You can
learn a lot of useful things, and even some not so useful things.

3. About this document

This document is in three parts. Part 1, this part, offers a table of
contents to the posts, plus a general introduction. Part 2 offers general
roller-coaster info -- abbreviations, definitions, and information on
organizations and references for the roller coaster/amusement park
enthusiast. Part 3 contains lists and statistics relating to coasters. It
is also the most volatile section, more likely than the others to be
changed. (The list of changes appears in Part 1, above.)

These articles are posted monthly to rec.roller-coaster, rec.answers, and
news.answers. The rec.roller-coaster FAQ was originally compiled by Dave
Rounds (da...@bcco.com), then maintained by Bill Buckley
(buc...@powdml.enet.dec.com), and has now fallen into my hands
(previously ge...@pmafire.inel.gov, now ge...@eecs.wsu.edu). Comments and
questions are most welcome via e-mail to Geoff.

You can get a copy of the latest version of this document via anonymous
FTP from the ``official'' roller-coaster FTP site, gboro.rowan.edu, in
directory /pub/Coasters (more on the site later). You can also get a
copy from the official archive of news.answers, which is on rtfm.mit.edu
in the directory /pub/usenet-by-group/rec.roller-coaster. (A lot of
other interesting FAQs are there, too. The name under which a FAQ is
archived appears in the Archive-name: line at the top of the article.
This FAQ, for example, is archived as roller-coaster-faq/part1. If you
just want to browse there, try directory /pub/usenet-by-hierarchy, where
the dots in newsgroup names represent directories. So these documents
are in /pub/usenet-by-hierarchy/rec/roller-coaster.)

If you don't know how to use FTP, or don't even know if you can at
your site (not all sites can), ask a knowledgeable user at your site.

Special thanks to all the contributors, commentators, error-correctors
and others who've helped to make this FAQ possible. They are (in no
particular order):

D. Inside Track ``Top Coasters'' Readers Survey

Many people want to know which is the best/wildest/awesomest/scariest
coaster in the world (or at least US). We can't answer that for you,
but we can pass on to you the results of the Inside Track magazine
reader's survey. This is an annual survey, the most recent version of
which was published in the August 1993 issue of Inside Track. Just
because a coaster is highly-ranked on this list doesn't mean *you*
will think it's best, but it does mean that lot of coaster
enthusiasts like it, and you probably will too. Rankings from past
years are given as well, to give you some idea of how things change
from year to year. If a column contains '-', it indicates that
coaster didn't place in the rankings for that year, for whatever
reason (it was new, it didn't get enough votes, etc.). Also note
that the 1992 and 1993 surveys list the top 50, 1991 listed the top 40,
and 1990 listed the top 20.

E. Amusement Park Attendance Statistics

The following list of the top 40 Amusement Parks, ranked by
attendance, is from Amusement Business. These statistics are for
1992.

NOTE: Policies at some parks forbid release of attendance figures.
An asterisk (*) appearing after the attendance figure indicates the
figure is an estimate, based on information gathered by reliable AB
sources. Parks that either did not report or did not qualify on the
basis of reported figures in 1990 and 1991 are indicated with '-'.

In addition, the March 26, 1993 Wall Street Journal listed the top
10 parks in attendance world-wide. The numbers for the North
American parks match Amusement Business' list. The non-North
American parks are listed with '.'s in the three rank columns and
a blank '% change' field. I've placed them into Amusement
Business' list because of the interest, not only to North American
readers of rec.roller-coaster, but also to all our friends
elsewhere! The attendance numbers for these parks is shown with a
question mark, since I don't know if these are official numbers or
estimates (it's a safe bet that the Disney figures are estimates,
of course).

F. Coming Attractions -- new coasters for 94 and beyond!

A common question on rec.roller-coaster is ``What new coaster is
park X getting for 1994?'' Here is the list of all announced, or at
least solidly rumored coasters being built in the next couple of
years. Note that no Arrow Pipeline coasters have been announced by
anyone at this time. ``Who's getting a Pipeline?'' or ``I heard
Cedar Point is getting a Pipeline'' is asked/stated often on
rec.roller-coaster, but as far as anyone who's telling knows, Arrow
hasn't sold any Pipeline coasters yet. ACE News reported in July
1992 that someone *would* be getting a Pipeline in 1993, saying the
sale was confirmed by Arrow Dynamics engineering director Dal
Freeman. A Disney employees' internal newsletter says Arrow
announced the sale of a Pipeline for the 1994 season. So far, none
of this has panned out. Note that the Cedar Point rumors should be
negated by the upcoming Raptor.

Anyway, on with the show....

(*) Mentioned in Amusement Business during early-mid 1993, however, it is
now confirmed that this coaster is not among the list of 1994 B&M
projects, while Paramount Communications have announced that their
New-4-94 attraction will be a "Days of Thunder" simulator attraction.

(**) While not formally announced by any organization, it was reported from
various text sources that Waldameer Park had received permission from
the city of Erie, PA during the Summer of 1993 to go ahead with the
building of this coaster, noting that Waldameer was trying desperately
to obtain the city's approval ASAP. While this announcement was
probably the most significant factor in the notion this coaster would
be a "New-4-94" attraction (also rumored as such through various
insiders in the Amusement Industry), a Fall article which appeared
recently in the "Erie Times" newspaper touted that Waldameer's New-4-94
attraction will be a 100' tall Giant Ferris Wheel by Chance Rides
International. The article did go on to mention that Waldameer Park
would be adding both a wooden and steel roller coasters as part of
their 15-year capital expansion project. The article mentioned that
the wooden coaster would be built by Custom Coasters, Inc. (CCI), and
would hopefully be open by 1996, the year which will mark the park's
100th year of operation.

(***) Also mentioned briefly in Amusement Business a while back, but
not yet formally announced by Six Flags Entertainment, or confirmed
by ACE, WNYCC, MACC, etc. At this point, it appears that this
attraction will not be added for the 1994 season.

I've been wondering about the most trains on a circuit category. If this is
supposed to represent the refers to the number of trains that can be run at a
single time that Revolution at SFMM can and has run 4 trains at a time quite
easily, although it usually make the day very hectic.

I'm not terribly happy with the "most trains on a circuit" category.

Disneyland can run 5 "trains" on each side of the Matterhorn (if I
recall correctly). Big Thunder Mountain has similar throughput.

I'd be happy to (again) open the discussion:

What coasters do you know of with the highest number of trains
that can be operating simultaneously?

Disneyworld's space mountain probably takes the award hands down; as I recall
they can run something like 14 (!) trains simuiltaneously on each side, for
a total of 28 trains operating simultaneously on the dual-tracked layout.
Granted, each train only seats 4 or 6 people (I forget at the moment but I
can always check my photos for accuracy). I think the Coaster at Playland
Park in Vancouver, B.C. also gets the prize for most trains on a wooden
single-tracked coaster: I rode this classic a couple of years ago when
the crew ran with three trains, and the lines were eaten up incredibly
fast. The operators didn't even let the train come to a complete stop in
the station before hustling riders out to empty the train for the next run.
BTW, there were at least 8 operators on hand for this 3-train operation.
According to Nancy McGrath and Scott Rutherford, the Montana Rusa in
Mexico City is due to run 6 trains on their dual-tracked layout; this
might be the most for a racing coaster, although I seem to remember
that Magic Mountain's Colossus was going to run 6 trains, too.

The Mine Ride at CP also can run 5 trains. I remember seeing 5 trains on the
circut many times during the late 60s and 70s though they haven't run it like
this in a few years. Since they put seatbelts in it I heard that the dispatch
time is too long with both the seatbelts and pedal pusher type safety bars.
I heard that two trains were modified with automatic safety bar releases and
the other three trains will be modified this winter so that they can run
5 trains once again.

Doesn't Space Mountain operated with 12 trains?

I believe that the Hullamvasut (Hill Train) in Budapest, Hungary can operate
with seven trains. Each train has three cars, carrying 5,4 and 5 seats.
Capacity is thus 28 plus the brakeman who rides in the middle car. When I
was there they were running three trains, and they did not stop in the station
at all! Just slowed to maybe 2mph and everyone jumped on. There were
no workers in the station at all. This is probably a record for the most
people on one track at the same time.

The Gemini at Cedar Point (my favorite steelie) normally operates with six
trains (three per track).

The Avalanche at King's Dominion opened running 5 six-car trains, but now
operates with 4 seven-car trains.

Just as a point of CP trivia history, the Mine Ride track was once
partially destroyed when a tornado came through and ripped a large tree
out of the ground and into the track. This was the summer of 1977 and
my first year as a CP employee. The Train station roof was also ripped
off and carried across the access road. My girlfriend was at the
station when it came through. We were in a car driving over to the
employees parking lot (near the Gemini now) when it went past. I guess
we're lucky we didn't get hit by a tree or blown away as it passed by.
I didn't realize what was going on at the time. We all just figured it
was a pretty bad rain storm as CP gets its share.

I'm probably the only person in the world outside of the Sandusky
Register and a few select insurance agencies that have pictures
(although the color's fading) of that fateful day. I heard that the
security guards were confiscating cameras & film that day. We went in
through the back entrance :-)

Our theatre (The Golden Palace) was intact which amazes me because we
were right next to the train station.

I remember that, Frontier Town was closed for a month while they fixed things
up. There was news film of the CP & LE Railroad track that showed the track
covered with trees. The train station in Frontier Town had to be totally
rebuilt. I didn't know the Mine Ride was damaged, how much of the track had
to be rebuilt?

Whoa, here! Since when can security guards confiscate private property? I
really, really don't believe that any security guards have the right to
confiscate any private property (esp. cameras and film) from the general
public, or even from park employees! Anyone who would even try this with
me would get some real problems, including my filing litigation against
them. Please, Ron, tell me that this did not happen! BTW, Ron, you have

I find the camera confiscations hard to believe also, especially since the
storm damage was well documented in the Cleveland papers and TV stations.
After a major storm like that the security and first aid people would have
many more pressing things to worry about than people's cameras. From what I
can remember from the pictures I've seen the structural damage was pretty
much limited to the train station with most of the other damage being
cosmetic. Lots and lots of trees down though, and probably light poles too.
Since you heard this from someone and didn't actually see it I'd bet that
the info you got wasn't entirely correct. BTW for those not familier with
the western part of Lake Erie, this is an area where the summer squals seem
to hit hardest. I've been at CP when a squal hit that made the rain go
horizontal, the wind sounded like a freight train and the trash cans literally
floated down the midway (at a pretty good clip). Not much damage at CP
except for a few flag poles bent completely in half and on the ground. Worst
storm I've ever been in though.

I don't remember exactly but I know it was at least one and maybe two
sections. It took them a long time to get around to fixing it (for an
amusement park) because of the insurance settlement. (I guess they were
dragging their feet during the assessment.)

I think the train station went without a roof for the remainder of the
season. I'll have to see if I can find the pictures.

Well, I can't say for sure as I got my film & camera out intact.
However, the area was closed to both employees & visitors so I suppose
that if you weren't supposed to be there...

We made up some excuse to get to "The Palace" to get some of the actors
"something or other" & we went in the back way so we didn't run into any
guards.

I think what I used was a little 110 pocket camera which looked like
one of those spy cameras you see them using in the movies. It fit
nicely into my pocket. I'll look around & see if I can locate them and
get one or two scanned in.

Yep, I can tell you about the storms too. Years 2-5 (78-81) were spent
working in the Marina Steakhouse. You knew something was coming when
the normally brownish-black water of the marina suddenly turned a pea
green. With all the windows that looked out on the marina, it wasn't
my favorite place during a storm.

hi folks...

i looked thru the FAQ and could not find a reference to a list mailing
roller coaster info out...we have smtp via uucp here but no newsfeed yet :-(...

so, i was hoping a LISTSERV function might be available...or an emailing list.

thanks for your help!

btw, i do not regularly read this list...i have a colleague who is an
enthusiast who wants to receive this info...so please email me with the
information.

thanks in advance!
