I remember when it happened. I was in 5th grade and right after school
we heard about it. I believe it was a little rainy that day. I also
believe that Marriot just sold the park to SF that season. I wasnt at
the park that day, but it was all over the news. It's remarkable that
those kids survived.

I was there the day that POS arrived at Rocky Point Park. They literally
ripped the ride apart and shipped it. It was a big ole mess when RPP got
it.

Then I was there when Gary Story(land) bought it during the Hurricane park
auction. Now it lives on at Geauga Lake.

Anyone know where Santa Clara's Edge went? It stayed at that park far
longer than Gurnee's did- I think through the '95 season (PGA got their
Intamin Giant Drop in '96).

I can't remember the park, but I'm fairly certain it went to South
America (Brazil, I think?).

Can some explain this post to me. What happened & what is at Geauga Lake, as
that park is very close to me.

The long and short of it:

The car reached the top of the tower but then rolled back and fell down
the shaft. No deaths, no serious injuries. This led to Intamin
installing anti-rollbacks at the top of all the 1st Generation towers.

The ride which suffered the mishap was sold and now resides at Geauga Lake.

The Edge was an Intamin Free Fall ride at Six Flags Great America. A
car fell from about midway up the lift and crashed into the bottom of
the shaft. (Some reports indicate it landed on another car, but I do
not believe that is true.) At that time the anti roll backs in the
shaft were spaced about every six feet, and because they were wet from
rain, they did not stop the car. The three passengers in the car
received severe injuries, but no one died.

After the accident Intamin modified the anti roll backs in the shaft on
all their Free Fall rides.

SFGAm sold the ride to Rocky Point were it ran for a few years. When
Rocky Point closed, Premier Parks bought the ride and installed it in
Geauga Lake as Mr. Hyde's Nasty Fall.

...where it's known as Mr. Hyde's Nasty Fall or at least it
was called that the last time I went there.

Thankx for the info.

Yes, i have been to Geauga & have seen the ride. I never rode it, but have
ridden Demon Drop at Cear Point ( same ride, different name. )

The Six Flags you mentioned...is that the one in NJ because I have been
there years ago.

Also, how long ago did this happen?

Thankx,
Louie

Six Flags Great America is in Gurnee Illinois, halfway between Chicago
and Milwaukee. The park in NJ you are referring to is Six Flags Great
Adventure. The incident at Great America happened in 1984, and
technically I think the park was still Marriott's Great America at that
time. I think SF closed the deal to purchase the park just a few days
after the accident.

Hopefully not for long. It was running for CoasterEXT in June, and it
looked to be extremely unpleasant as it subjected riders to a brick-wall
stop on the reversing tire at the end of the brake. Today it was down
for unspecified reasons.

What color is Mr. Hyde these days? Last time I was at the park, it
was purple and green (I think)? Am I recalling correctly?
