Until now, I've never given any thought to what coaster that is in the movie
Richie Rich. Maybe that was discussed here before but I wasn't around then.

Nope. It's Iron Wolf (I think that's the right name?) at Six Flags Great
America in Illinois.

As mentioned about 20 times here on RRC, it is the Iron Wolf at Six Flags
Great America.

I hate to sound so mean in that sentence, but you should really check
DejaNews before you ask a question that has most likely already been asked
and answered by fellow RRCers.

The coaster in Richie Rich is the Iron Wolf at Six Flags Great America
in Gurnee, Illinois. This ride opened in 1990 and was the very first B
& M coaster built anywhere. My friends and I were at the park the day
after filming, and the diamond logo was still on the front of one of the
two trains. We asked what it was and were told by a ride operator that
is was used in filming of this movie. We made it a point to see the
film because it was "our ride". It was about the only interesting thing
in an otherwise poor movie. It"s still great, rode it today.

The Richie Rich movie was kind of lame, but there was another "ride"
in it that I only wish would show up at some park: the "Kidapult".
Rider launched by a catapult (no vehicle, just the rider), flying
through the air, landing on giant air bags. It looked like fun.
Probably a very low capacity ride, though, plus I doubt that you could
find insurance to operate it.

It is the Iron Wolf. I worked for Six Flags at the time and was in charge of the use of the ride for the film. I met with the director several times and eaven measured Culkin and the other kids to make sure they were tall enough to ride.

They brought in tons of extra evergreens and other trees to fill in the landscape and mask the nearby maintenance buildings.

The art director wanted a much different look to the front of the coaster (a 3-D dragon head, I think) but that was turned down for safety reasons.

I believe they used our coaster because the par was, at that time, owned by Time-Warner.

JR

I remember that the coaster scenes were shot on the very first day of filming.
