Coming in from the UK, I'll presume you'll be flying a commercial
airline. With that in mind, Cleveland would be your best airport
destination, with CP being approximately a one hour drive from there (but
don't ask me to convert one hour into metric <g>)

Yes, I agree that Cleveland is a bit closer to CP, but "much closer to
PKI?" Don't think so, David - unless somebody moved Cincinatti! ;-)

Check your map, again. Columbus is definitely closer to PKI than
Cleveland.

(I'm sure that was just an oversight on your part!)

Can't believe I beat Dave A. to this one! (He must be busy...)

To be precise, Giffin-Sandusky is an airport closest to Cedar Point. However,
it is a General Aviation airport and doesn't have commuter/airline services.
(but it is great for single engines and the like!) So, from your side of
the pond,
Cleveland is probably the best bet, but you'll need a rental car!

PKI is about 4 to 5 hours' drive south.

Well, when I did the trip, I flew in and out of Columbus. For
domestic flights, at least, it was DRASTICALLY cheaper than the other
airports from both coasts. But it's also not a major destination, so
you might have an extra stopover.

I'm not sure about the price difference from the UK, though.
Cleveland is a bit closer to CP and much closer to PKI, but it only
added an hour or two to the trips and saved be like $80-100! Plus, it
was closer to Kennywood, which was the first stop on out coaster tour
of Ohio! (Well, Ohio phus one!)

Yup, I've been busy. I keep burning up my on-line time before I have a
chance to get all the stuff written I want to write (my *ONLY* complaint
about my ISP...The Greater Columbus Freenet...is that I only get 120
minutes/day online, and Capital (my employer) doesn't have a news server.).

Anyway, a lot will depend on what city you enter the U-S through. I'm not
certain of this, but I am almost willing to bet that you will enter the
U-S via New York or Chicago, though Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky is not
out of the question. But this could be important to your travel plans.

Ohio is not a huge state. From Cleveland, it takes about an hour to get
to Cedar Point; from Columbus it takes between two and 2.5 hours; Kings
Island is another 80 miles (call it an hour and a half) from Columbus, and
about a half hour from the CVG airport. Port Columbus happens to be a hub
for America West airlines, which means that it can be a fairly cheap city
to fly into. Furthermore, if you are planning to visit both CP and PKI,
it is in a nice central location...

Indiana Beach Cedar Point Geauga Lake
(4 hours) (2.2 hours) (3 hours)
Kennywood
(3 hours)
Wyandot Lake
(15 minutes)

Kings Island
(1.5 hours)
Stricker's Grove Camden Park
(2.0 hours) (2.7 hours)
Americana
(1.7 hours)
Holiday World Kentucky Kingdom
(4.5 hours) (3.2 hours)

(Obviously not to scale!)
If you need driving directions or past trip reports for any of these
parks, let me know!

Well, this based on my perhaps faulty memory of phone discussions I
had witht he guy I took this trip with when we were deciding where to
fly to and from. Oh, well!

But if Columbus IS closer to PKI, then it's definitely better to have
that as the destination. It's much cheaper.

Maybe I shoudl do more iresearch on the City of my birth. I was born
in Columbus, but was adopted from birth. Other than my time in, to
and from the airport this past year, some time in the hospital after
birth, and a visit to court to finalize the adoption when I was a few
weeks old, I've never spent any time there. So, what do I do when I
finally get there? Leave immediately to go coastering! Priorities!

Are you thinking about the 1000 Emin, 10 Ehr, Euroday?
Does have the advantage when it comes to a 1Ehr ERT/ERS ;-)

If you're looking to fly direct from the UK, Cincinnati would be your best
bet (by far!). When I flew to London last fall, fares were several hundred
dollars cheaper out of Cincy than Columbus, plus Delta has direct flights
to and from London. No scheduled airline flies directly to Europe from
Columbus. (By the way, with due respect to David, Cleveland's airport is
NOT closer to PKI than Columbus. From the Columbus airport, you're about
90 minutes from PKI; from Cleveland, you're pushing 2½-3 hours).

If you are planning to add Kennywood to your coaster tour (and you
definitely should, IMHO!), you might also consider flying into Pittsburgh.
British Airways, I believe, flies direct to/from Pittsburgh from London.

On the other hand, if you are stopping elsewhere in the States before
coming to the Midwest, domestic flights into and out of Columbus are often
the cheapest option!

*** Conversion is simple. Remember metric is no calculations just
decimal point moving. So at typical highway speeds a 1-hour trip wlll be
100 kilometers long. (Move the decimal 2 places to the right.)

Conversely, to figure out how long it takes to drive 485 kilometers.
move the point 2 places to the LEFT to get 4.85 hours, not counting stops.

Cleveland lost its flight to London, and I'm not sure if Columbus has
any direct flights. Your best bet might be British Airways London to
Pittsburgh, then US Air Pittsburgh to Cleveland. If you get a long
enough layover you can hit Kennywood.

I think there are enough Pittsburgh to Cleveland flights that you'd have to schedule such a
layover. I'd recommend 5-6 hours or more if you're planning on hitting Kennywood from the
airport (given customs, rental car, drive (20 miles, heavy traffic), parking, walk to coasters,
lines, rides, leave, drive, check in car, etc. etc.

However, as I understand it, the trip has been cancelled this year since the original poster's
girlfriend would rather spend a week on the beach in Florida rather than hitting the coasters.

It would have to be a LONG layover, though... Kennywood is about half
an hour from Pittsburgh International Airport, if the traffic cooperates.
And, during the daytime hours, it usually doesn't. (The route goes
through downtown Pittsburgh, over the busiest stretch of highway in
the city. No, there isn't any good shortcut over back roads either...)

Actually it would probably be just as easy to rent a car in Pittsburgh
and drive to CP. It's only about 3 to 3.5 hours. Then of course you
also have the freedom to get to Kennywood, Geauga Lake, Conneaut,
etc.
