I cannot verify this other than the posting, would appreciate it if
someone who knows this important person to the rail advocate community
would help out.
I was hoping this was a hox, but the TrainNet forum is moderated.

The poster had the same last name. From the content of the message, he
was joking about his brother/son/uncle/cousin's 40th birthday.

finger shows Dan Dawdy was logged on until 9:50 tonight. While this
does not mean Dan is still alive, some relative could have been logged
in, an ls -al on his account shows he accessed his mail, read netnews,
and performed maintenance on his web site today. Unusual activities
for a relative closing down the account of a departed netter.

All CompuServe forums are moderated usually with many Sysops. TrainNet has
about 6 of them.
I am one of the moderators (section leaders) on the Travel Forum, rail

" important person to the rail advocate community"??? Stop already, your
making me blush!!! This was a joke started by my "much older" brother on the
TrainNet forum for my 40th birthday. It was clear from the orginal post,
that he was joking, or so I thought. Dorr, the head of TrainNet, recieved
over 30 E-mails asking if it were true. It was at that point, he pulled the
message from view. Thanks for asking and sorry to cause such a "stir" here on
the group.

*Sheesh*
Well, happy birthday anyway Dan. And just remember, Santa Fe is still
operating locomotives that are older than you are...

Hoax! The message announcing Dan's demise was posted by his brother
Richard - on the occasion of his 40th birthday. He is not - repeat not -
dead, just somewhat over the hill ;-)
TrainNet is indeed moderated but messages are checked only after being
posted - this one caused Dan (who is still sprightly and lucid despite
his advancing years :-) ) to be swamped with e-mail from his doting
followers.

I waited a couple days before posting this, you never showed and the
message stayed on TrainNet.
Glad you are in good health, my bother-in-law was too at your age and
died suddenly, this about 8 hears ago.
Dennis [Minnesota/BN Highline]
Oh, just great, I soiled my armor!
I hope you post the birthday of this 'Richard'. He ruined my whole weekend.
I have a few posts for him <G>.
Don
You are right. I am an assistant sysop on TrainNet. The messages
do go right up. Dorr or any of us can pull them from view, but only
after they go public. In this case, it was pulled within two hours
of being posted by my "much older" brother. Ya know, by the time
this thread dies, I will be dead :-)
Have a safe holiday to all.
Dan

I wasn't suggesting that being moderated was either good
or bad; simply that I thought there was no way this hoax
posting could reasonably have been prevented, by my good
friend Dorr or any of the others.
Tim.
Dan just told me that he is alive and well at 40 years. It was
a joke of his older brother.. the railfan community did NOT lose
him :-)
