I have revised my three old railroad fonts and added four new ones.
The most notable one is RAILROAD ROMAN!!!
In addition to the new fonts, I have made IBM (windows) versions of
the fonts.
Rail Passenger, Rail Freight, Rail Mod Pax --- MAC
RR_PSNGR, RR_FRGHT, RRMODPAS --- IBM
These are picture fonts depicting various collections of railroad
equipment. As you type new letters in your word processor, new cars are
coupled onto the end of the train. For example, if you type "q-a-z" you
would get a locomotive-boxcar-caboose coupled together in your document.
Rail Passenger - passenger trains ca. 1955
Rail Modern Passenger - passenger trains ca. 1985
Rail Freight - freight trains ca. 1965
Note that these fonts can be combined for mixed trains.
Railroad Roman, Empire Builder --- MAC
RR_ROMAN, EMP_BLDR --- IBM
These fonts are based on lettering and typefaces used by the
railroads.
Railroad roman captures the hand painted letters used on railway
equipment around the turn of the century. Some railroads still use a
variation of it today (note, this hand lettering is not exclusive to
railroads, all of the doors in my building are painted in a variation of
this lettering). RRR is an attractive Roman font.
Empire Builder is inspired by the lettering used by the Great
Northern Railroad from the 40's through the 60's. It is a modern, sans
serf font.
Alphabet Train --- MAC
ABCTRAIN --- IBM
Railroad Roman meets Railroad Freight. This font is a collection of
letters and numbers on flat cars. This font can be combined with
RRFreight, RRPassenger or RRModPax for a real mixed train. Very handy
for page numbers or titles. (Railfans take note, this font has a steam
locomotive)
Railroad Heralds --- MAC
RRHERALD --- IBM
This is a small collection of railroad heralds (logos). To
compensate for the small size, I have included a bonus rail font in this
package.
Railroad Icons --- MAC only
There are about 40 railroad related icons in this collection
including several F-7's, coaches, heralds and couple of steam engines.
I do ask a small shareware fee for the files (I have put hundreds of
hours of work into them) but there are no restrictions on the files and
you can down load them freely. See the included readme files for more
details on shareware.
You may distribute the fonts and icons freely, as long as you include
all of the included files.
So, how do you get files? Mac first, then IBM.
MAC files,
are available for anonymous ftp from at least two sites. They can
also be found on AOL and other dialup services. If you don't have
access to these services or you don't know how to FTP see FONTS BY MAIL
below.
I post the Mac files to:
sumex-aim.stanford.edu
mac.archive.umich.edu
Within a day or so of appearing on these two sites, they should be
available at a whole list of other sites. Good places to look for my
files:
at sumex:
info-mac/font/ps/__<font name>__
info-mac/font/tt/__<font name>__
info-mac/gui/grf/railroad-icons.hqx
at umich:
mac/system.extensions/font/truetype/__<font name>__
mac/system.extensions/font/type1/__<font name>__
Both of these sites are rather busy, but you can access them via a
number of "mirrors". Look at:
wuarchive.wustl.edu in the directory
/systems/mac/(info-mac or umich)
src.doc.ic.ac.uk in the directory
computing/systems/mac/(info-mac or umich)
archie.au in the directory
micros/mac/(info-mac or umich)
IBM files,
are slowly coming on line. They should be available for anonymous
ftp from at least one site within the week. If you don't find them
right away, they should show up soon. I will try to make a follow up
posting when they are firmly established on the net. If you don't have
access to these services or you don't know how to FTP see FONTS BY MAIL
below.
The first place the fonts should show up is at:
in the directory
/pub/hazel/Type
(btw thank you for giving my fonts a site)
I don't know how permanent this home will be. I hope to get the fonts
onto a couple of other sites. IT MAY TAKE A LITTLE WHILE BEFORE THEY
ARE AT THESE SITES THOUGH. For example:
PROBABLY in or around the directory: /pub/pc/win3/fonts check in
subdirectories ATM and TrueType though.
PROBABLY in or around the directory: /pub/msdos_uploads/win3 or
subdirectory fonts.
I have run out of space on my e-mail account and I will not e-mail fonts
out except for special situations.
FONTS BY MAIL
If you do not have access to any of the services above, you can get
the fonts by snail-mail. Simply send a FORMATTED 3.5" HD disk and a
SELF ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE to me at the following address. Please
let me know where you heard about the fonts.
Benn Coifman
ASUC Box 624 # 4510
Bancroft & Telegraph
Berkeley, CA 94720-4510
(be sure to include your e-mail address in case I have any questions)
If you do not hear back from me in a reasonable amount of time, please
double check my address and drop me a note. At least one package has
been lost in the back rooms of the ASUC (where I rent my box).

Yes, this font seems to have stayed alive on office doors in older
university buildings, since I've seen a similar font in engineering
buildings at Univ. of Washington, Wisconsin (Madison) and Illinois. But
it's particularly interesting that the Transportation building at Univ.
of Illinois, where I had an office when I was a grad student there, has
hand-painted the names of office occupants in this font every year since
1912 -- when the building was built for the Railroad Engineering
department.
