I spotted an eastbound stacker yesterday with containers marked with an
"EMP" logo. About 3/4 of the train was these containers, and they all were
sparkling new. Reporting marks were EMPU. Anyone know who owns these?

Thanks,

What color were these containers? If they were green, they may be
Evergreen containers, as Evergreen sometimes goes by "EMC," with the
last letter being designated towards a specific kind of container
service (leasing, etc.)

EMPU is the reporting marks for the "Equipment Management Pool", which is
a consortium of intermodal equipment jointly owned/operated by
UP, NS, CR and maybe a couple of other outfits.. Check out the colors
of the logo for hints to their heritage!

Nifty looking 48' containers, IMHO! :-)

EMP is a joint venture formed by Norfolk Southern, Conrail and Union
Pacific to provide domestic containers for intermodal customers and
to improve equipment utilization. The containers look new because
they are. It's a fairly recent development, and they expect to have
3,000 containers in service by July.

in regards to emp containers these containers were being stock
piled in a contianer storage yard in the Long Beach, Ca. area
a few months ago. They have since gone into service on the U.P.
These containers may have bin built in Mexico by HYUNDAI as
a large number of new containers are being built down there. On
the front of these containers is a I.D. plate with serial # vin #
cont.# date and place of manufacture. Transamerica Leasing
ordered new containers and are on lease to APL American President Lines ,
CSX also put in service these new containers for Sealand . The
reporting marks for the Transamerica containers are TRLU and the
reporting marks for Sealand are CSXU these only apply to the 48 foot
domestic boxes. Getting back to EMP they are being matched up with new
yellow chassis when being moved on the highway they also have a Union
Pacific logo on the side. Hope this helps out. Bye for now

Thanks to all who contributed info on this thread. One more question, anyone
know what the letters 'EMP' stand for?

Interesting. What routes are they plying - so far - do you know? I have
seen none in Los Angeles so far. Are there any particular
characteristics I should look out for, such as color? Are they
outside-braced or smooth-sdied or some of each? What sizes do they have
and are any HO models available that you know of?

PS: When ATSF got theirs, weren't some of those they bought used?

Yesterday while riding the return leg (northbound) inaugural run of the
new Piedmont (Amtrak/NC DoT) passenger train, we met a Charlotte-bound
intermodal train on NS with lots of EMP containers. This was the first
I had seen in N.C. -- though I don't get over to the main north-south
NS track through Greensboro and Charlotte that often.

The southbound intermodal was running right behind a RoadRailer train,
which we met at speed on double track.

The EMP containers where basically off-white from what I recall with the
red EMP logo. These were smooth-sided. I believe these were 40 or 48 ft
units, but since both trains were moving, I didn't get that long a look.

This is not about EMP containers, but last weekend on Conrail in Selkirk
yard I saw a train headed down the West Shore line with "Polish Shipping
Line" containers (or some such name). There were a bunch of them, some
were refrigerated.. Imported kielbasa perhaps?

You probably saw "Polish Ocean Line" ("POL") containers going to Port
Elizabeth for export, if they were going "down" the River line (which I
assume is South, or railroad direction East). Meat products move from
the US Midwest to Europe by ship all the time.. Don Lotz

Don, thanks for the info. They were indeed POL containers. So the kielbasa
is being exported to Poland, instead of imported? <g>
