Well, I went on the "Farewell to the U34CH" trip on Saturday, and here are some
quick impressions...

Got to Hoboken early in the morning, and found FRESHLY REPAINTED (!) U34CH's
4176 (in NJT silver) and 4172 (in NJDOT blue/silver). Needless to say, LOTS
of film expended there!

Surprise of the morning was that the trip wasn't running from Hoboken to
Spring Valley and Denville as originally planned... It ran:

* Hoboken to NETCONG via the Boonton Line
* Netcong to West End via the Morris & Essex Line
* West End to Suffern via the Main Line
* Suffern to Rutherford via the Bergen County Line
* Rutherford to Spring Valley via the Pascack Valley Line
* Spring Valley to Hoboken via the Pascack Valley/Main Line

A total of over 180 miles! SEVEN photo stops were held, in order:

* Mountain Lakes (Boonton Line) - Posed the 4176 alongside the quaint
stone station. Made a beautiful shot.
* Netcong (Boonton Line) - 4176 along the station - sorta tight shot, but
not bad.
* Ridgewood (Main Line) - Lunch stop at what is arguably the nicest station
on the old Erie. Great sun, both engines available for photography.
* Suffern (Main Line) - Tight shot, very wedgy, but not bad.
* Radburn (Bergen County Line) - Would have been better if construction wasn't
going on adjacent to the station! Nice old stone building as a prop.
* Oradell (Pascack Valley Line) - Nice station, but you really couldn't work
it into the picture.
* Harmon Cove (Main Line) - Gorgeous sun (until this big thunderstorm cloud
suddenly blocked it out!). Have the tall Harmon Cove towers in the background
as a super prop.

All the photo stops went very well, and the train arrived earlier than
advertisted at Hoboken (5:50 PM, instead of 6:30 PM) - our train was moving
at a good 60+ the whole time. Even the U-boats performed splendidly - the
backup unit trailing us (GP40PH-2 4104) wasn't needed. Unfortunately, they
didn't smoke at all, with the exception of some puffing at Oradell (hey,
it's better than nothing!). Oh yeah, someone thoughtfully made a red EL
diamond to paste onto the nose of the 4172. Cute!

If you missed it, NJT will be running the "true" final trips during Hoboken
Festival...

Will get my pix back Tuesday... also will put up scanned images, if anyone will
do it for me - I can't seem to put to wuarchive...

Yes, the trip was fun! 4176 and 4172 ran superbly. The highlight of the
trip, though, had to be Frank Etzel and crew moving the dumpster at
Mountain Lakes! And then there was the guy in Netcong in the blue shirt,
but I won't get into that...

Are any of these slated for preservation? The fresh paint is a hopeful
sign. Seems like there have been a number of "Farewell to the (mumble)"
trips like Santa Fe's "Farewell to the PA" or NW's "Farewell to the
Trainmaster" where no preservation effort was mounted. The engines in
question were either scrapped out (PA's) or converted to hump slugs
(Trainmaster) after the trip, leaving no preserved examples in the USA.
It'd be a shame to have the U34's go the same way.
Has anybody saved _any_ 6-axle U-boats yet? Extra 2200 South's Preserved
Diesels lists through 1990 don't show any, and it may already be too late
for models like the U25C and U28C.

The Lake Superior and Ishpeming has put a U25C (in LS&I's bright red paint
scheme), plus an ore car and a caboose in a small park under the approach to
its ore dock in Marquette, Michigan.

Yes, I've got a photo of this that I'll scan and put up. BTW, I'm the
guy who made the rather loud comment about having the woman walking through
the scene "pose seductively." :)

The fresh paint doesn't mean anything... :( ONE is slated for preservation,
but I guess that's better than NONE... actually, this morning on my way into
work, I passed U34CH #4166 (replete with an EL diamond on its side!) and
GP40PH-2 #4147 rolling along in work train service :) - ahhhh.

As for the fresh paint, again - remember the LIRR's "Farewell to the C420's"
trip? They painted two of them up in the new yellow/blue scheme, ran one trip-
and then sold 'em to Naporano! (At least they went down to Argentina...)

Reportedly, CR and CSX are both interested in buying the units - but only
to be used for parts :(

And yes, there is at least one six-axle U-boat saved to the best of my
knowledge - the Reading Tech & Hist. Society has ex-RDG #6300, a U30C. It's
in CR paint right now, but knowing them, it will be repainted soon.
The U34CH will make two - any other groups interested in getting a U-boat? :)

I was wearing a Master Card World Cup t-shirt. And no, I'm not going to scan

pix...

I know the employee who applied the EL diamond! Too bad it's not correct
for the sides, though. I saw the 4166 heading backwards over the Passaic
River in Newark yesterday as I left work. :) NJT is keeping four or five
for work train service. As for auction, rumors abound of CSX or CR purchasing
the fleet and ripping them apart (GASP!) for parts, and scrapping the rest...

Sigh.

I'm by no means a locomotive expert, so I may be missing some trivial point
here, but I believe the Connecticut Valley Railroad Museum (or whatever it's
being called this week) at Essex CT has an ex-New Haven U25(mumble). I think
it was the last new locomotive delivered to the New Haven.

Which reminds me that I once heard that there was an Erie Lackawanna Historical
Society. If that still exists (or if there are DL&W and/or Erie Historical
Societies) could someone EMAIL me a contact point please.

Please EMAIL or wait a week or so before posting. I am going on vacation for
a week and will lose several days worth of posts.

Here are the U-boats that are preserved that I can think of off the top of my
head...

Isn't there a preserved WP U-boat somewhere?

CSX had the last regular operating U25B (3416, ex-L&N 1616) which was retired
4-1-89. I think it was donated to the B&O railroad museum, but I think it was
lent to the Tennessee Railroad Museum for the summer. I'm not sure what paint
job it's in though. Another one (3417, ex-L&N 1617) was retired just a couple
weeks before the 3416, and that one was wearing Family Lines paint.

I remember you... I'll scan the dumpster shot, as I am just getting
slides, and it's easier to make prints of. But as for the blue shirt, I
don't have it.

I know what you mean about 4166. The emblem should be in the front and the
back, the NJDOT logo goes on the sides.

As of last month, 1616 was at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum at
"Grand Junction", TN (east Chattanooga) painted in fresh L&N yellow and
gray. It was on display (not operating), and the cab was open to visitors.
Compared to EMD cabs, that one felt downright spacious. I was a little
surprised when I sat down at the controls to find that the throttle only had
8-positions. I had read somewhere that, unlike most other diesels, U25Bs
had 16-position throttles.

Unit #3100 is shown in the same preserved diesels list in X2200 as 7028.
My type-eye analog text scanner somehow missed it. ;) It is issue 88, J/A/S
1988, page 27. The listing for 7028 (paraphrased) is:

old R/N Model B/N B/D Acq/D Display Location
SP 7028 GE 7028 U28B (U25 body) 35855 1/66 c.1/88 Orange Empire Ry
Museum via GE trade-in

I don't see a correction in the Issue 90 list...anyone know where this
unit really went?
