Hello
I'm thinking about getting a Drake receiver... I seem to re-call that
Drake had problems with the R8A ( not as good as the original R8 ) and then
came out shorty after with the R8B... but I could be all wrong about this..
Is there any major difference in the receive...ability of either radio ?

thanks tim

Although the R8A is no longer available, at least from the company,
Drake's web site recently listed the specifications for both the R8A and
R8B. That should allow you to make a comparison.

The R8B has five selectable bandwidths plus selectable sideband
synchronous detection, which I do not think was on the R8.

The changes seemed to work well, as the 1999 edition of Passport to
World Band Radio gives the R8B five stars (the maximum rating) and a
"Passport's Choice" award.

I have had an R8B for a while and I am quite satisfied with it. The
internal speaker is marginal, and one should really plan on adding a
good external speaker to this set. However, it is both sensitive and
selective and very pleasant to operate.

I have owned both the R8A and currently own an R8B. I can tell you that
radiowise, both are identical in performance except for the fact that the
R8B has a superlative sideband selectable synchronous detector. The only
other change is that the R8B has more memories and better internal
software/firmware for running the R8B on software such as ERGO or Fineware.

A good used R8A would still be a very good buy if the price was right. I
owned my R8A for two years and it was completely reliable and caught very
many rare DX stations.
