Mr Whitt of Medium Wave Circle posted a list of Loop antennas for
mediumwave.
One of the names that were on the list was of Graham Maynard. His
loops seem to be popular and used by many MW listeners and DX-ers. I
talked to Mr. Maynard on the phone and he explained the different
types available and their prices (which are not cheap but decent). And
lower than the KIWA Loop for sure!

Does anyone use an antenna of Mr. Maynard? What type, how do they
look, how are they constructed and how is their performance and ease
of use?

Hope to hear from you,

I haven't purchased a loop from Mr Maynard, but his name rings a bell.
The loops I have built have been from construction articles out of the
UK magazine "Practical Wireless". My best success was a spiral loop
designed (I'm sure) by Mr Maynard. It had a Q multiplier circuit, and
the bandwidth could be adjusted so that it was so narrow that you could
tune the loop to whichever sideband you wanted, and actually have the
aerial selecting only part of the sideband! When I was using this loop I
was in my pre-Racal/Drake days and used a cheap radio with an fairly
broad IF. The spiral loop had a narrower bandwidth than the radio! Lotsa
of the stuff I heard were only there due to this aerial.

The version I made was 1.5 metres in diameter, but had hinges installed
on each arm, so that it could be folded into a manageable bundle. I have
fond memories of driving around New Zealand in my racing Mini with a
Racal RA17L strapped into the passenger harness and the spiral loop
packed on the back seat. Sigh!

They also published info on an MW-Q loop. I didn't have the same success
with this model. I prefer the spiral loop.

Enjoy!
