Just a suggestion (and you've probably tried it):

The DX440 (ATS803) can sometimes get very confused. I've had the symptoms you
mention on mine. Taking *all* the batteries out and disconnecting the power
supply for ten minutes and then restoring them cured it! Let me know if it
works.

My Radio Shack DX440, a great little radio, needs repair. After five
years, the mode feature doesn't function. Clock shows, but can't turn
receiver on (power and tuning knobs don't function). I really like this
receiver, but I wonder if the cost of repair will cost more than a
comparably-good radio? Suggestions?

Give the service folks at Universal Radio a call. When I blew out my
ATS-803A, they were able to diagnose it over the phone and tell me
exactly how much it'd cost to get fixed. Since the DX440 and the 803A are
the same radio, they ought to be able to take care of you, or at least
give you some idea of whether repairing it makes sense. Their number is
(800)431-3939.

Just a satisfied customer...

My DX440 quit working a while ago. I did not use it in a year, and when I
went to use it, it was dead. Thought the problem was with the ac adapter,
but it is ok. Personally, I didn't like the DX440 anyways, so it'll stay
dead for a long time...

I have a Sangean 803A (same as DX-440) that was hit by ligntening. I called
Universal Amateur Radio 1-800-431-3939 and found out the upgrade Sangean
ATS-818 is $169.95. I also found out they has a good used Sony ICF-2010 for
$229 and I decided to buy that instead.

I sound like you microprocessor has died. That may be costly to replace
because they will probably replace the entire circuit board. Since this is the
most complex part of the radio, I would expect the cost the be highest. Make
sure you get a quote before they fix it. If it cost too much, tell them to
forget it and mail order something better.

You are the one who has to determine how much value the DX-440 is to you. The
DX-440 is a reasonable performer, but, it is short on features like > 10
memories and multiple timers. If you want a better radio then maybe it is not
worth fixing since a used DX-440 won't bring much used or broken.

I've been using a DX-440 for a long time and like it. If you don't want yours,
I'd be more than happry to take it off your hands ;-)

That always worked for me, too.
