I recently aquired an FRA7700 active antenna, but no manual. I'd like to
use it with my FRG8800, and possibly with my other radios. Would love to
get a copy of a manual, and would appreciate any comments or info anyone
has about this unit.

Would also be interested in any accessories (such as the VHF converter)
for the 8800.

Thanks

John

Hi John,
The FRA-7700 is an excellent active antenna and a the best I've used!
I also have a FRG-8800 and it's one of the best I've used! Along with the
FRA-7700 it can't be beat. Hook up is detailed in the owners manual but you
would be better off doing the "mod" which is to join both output cables
together and use the SO-239 input (on the radio) and use the "DX-BC" "SW-BC"
switch for best gain. This is the usual way to get the best performance out of
it. The FRV-7700 is not too good and I got rid of mine. On the other hand the
internal FRV-8800 works quite well but good luck finding one!! I just did
after looking a good year and it ran me a $100!! But now the rig is complete.
The FRT-7700 antenna tuner is not bad also, but I would go with the FRA-7700
hands down!!! Call YAESU for copies of owners or service manuals at:

I have the FRA-7700 and the FRG-8800 combo as well, but didn't need any
mod or manual. Just connect the power plug to the accesory jack, and
connect the antenna wires to the antenna terminals.

A mod will be needed to use with other radios, but not the FRG-8800.
The FRA-7700 gave me just as good signal as with a long wire antenna by
the way, and since I could not tell any difference when switching
between the two, I took down the long wire antenna.

This is a great combination, these two units, and you will be pleased.
Note however, you will have to continuously tune your 7700 as you tune
across the bands on the 8800.

Hi again, just wanted to add that you will get much better performance WITH
the mod I mentioned as it allows the use of one antenna for SW/BC (at the
FRA-8800) You will still have separate output wires to the radio that will go
to each terminal but do what ever you wish, just the voice of experience as
I've had two and used them with and without the mod. You will see much better
performance when in the lower freqs. such as LW,and Broadcast.
If you are having trouble just E-MAIL me and I'll be glad to send a copy of
the Schematics and disscuss the procedure.

I stand corrected! I was thinking of the FRT-7700 for the Mod. The mod to the
FRA-7700 is indeed for use with another non-Yaesu rig but if done will still
allow operation with the FRG-7700-8800 rigs as well. Good if you want to use
it with other rigs. BUT adding a aux antenna connector such as a SO-239 or RCA
jack to the telescopic ant input will add more flexibility to the unit. Also a
n external DC input is needed using the din jack or adding a separate mini
jack.
Sorry for the confusion!

P.S. Deja-news seems much faster than the standard IP news feeders!

Geez, now I want to get the active antenna and the rig itself! Where do I find
these units?! :-)
I'd love to hear from anyone interested in selling theirs! (Fat chance, I
know!)
