Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had info/critiques about Radio Shack's DX200 &
394? It seems to be that the 394 is a popular model and was one I was
looking at getting when it came out but I guess was quickly discontinued.
The DX-200 looks to be a fun unit, I like the old "dial" image. ANyway I'm
wanting to do some QSL contests with them that's why I'm asking.

Thanks
Steve

P.S.
If anyone has one they want to sell, (Cheaply!), I would be very
interested. :-)

Neither of these two units will win you many QSL contests.

Steve consider yourself blessed that you weren't able to get the 394
before it was discontinued! I was not so lucky, I bought the first
production (DX-394 Model A) put out by RS - set me back $400 plus $25
sales tax and I was dumb enough to purchase the extended warranty which
added another $40 or so (can't remember exact amount). Ouch! It hurts
even now just typing the figures! Anyway, I laid out roughly $475 for
that lemon. By the time all was said and done, after a series of price
drops they mercifully discontinued production. The last clearance price
I saw on the 394 was $59 - unbelievable.

The DX-394 without the modifications has very bad performance (AM, AGC,AM
Filter, Audio and Noise Blanker circuits) after doing the changes the
improvement is shockingly drastic.
The internal speaker is also the pits (go with an external one from an old
getto blaster box and sit the 394 on top).

Thanks for the information Joe but I unloaded that sucker long ago.
While awaiting shipment of a Grundig Satellite 800 I am enjoying
shortwave on a Realistic Astronaut 4 which I purchased for $4. It
serves me better than the DX-394 did!

You'd have better luck with a DX-160 if getting the most QSL cards is your
goal. My 20 year old DX-160 with a 60' random wire will outperform my DX-394
with a multiband dipole any day of the week. The main appeal of the DX-200 is
its value as a collectors item. I suggest you try and pick up a used DX-160 on
eBay or one of the radio swap groups. While it's true that the DX-160 drifts
in SSB mode, it is much more sensitive than either the DX-394 or DX-200, and a
used DX-160 in good condition will only set you back about $40-$60.

Thanks,
I'll check it out. I've seen them on eBay but really didn't know much
about them. I guess all the info I heard about the DX-394 was completely
wrong!

Thanks!

Hmm, I don't know what those guys were on when they gave the reviews a while
back but the more I'm hearing about the DX-394 the better I'm off not
getting one!

Thanks
Steve

I bought a DX-394 B model at RS for about $70 two years ago. I've
heard better. However, it's worth it at the price for an extra radio for
my living room. I'll get around to putting in the mods later. I stuck an
external preselector I had in my parts box on the front end and the
reception results were fine.

Ok now I'm torn! Should I get one or not. I can't afford the really nice
ones, ($500.00 and up), but I'm just looking to get started and figure with
the mods, my GRE amp, and a DSP, & with a good antenna I should be able to
have SOME fun! ;-) I'm not looking to do serious QSL yet and just want to
play for the time being. Our landlords are really cool and would probably
let me put up an antenna so that should be no problem. I heard a station in
Oakland the other night and thought it was really neat and then last night I
was listening to Radio Havana all on my little Grundig Traveller II, I just
wonder what the DX-394 with the above setup would be like?
I've got plans for my main rack with all the goodies but it won't be
anywhere close to being worked on for several years. I'm 30 and the wife and
I are really wanting to buy a house so cheap is my only way. If any of you
live in or around Denver you know how expensive housing is. Anyway, sorry
about the soap box, just want to get something started.

Thanks
Steve

If you can find a clean DX-394 for $70-125 go for it and get the KIWA AM
filter upgrade and just do the simple audio, noise blanker mods and find a
external speaker.
It a dramatic difference.
There are loads of WebPages on the DX-394 information is easy.

The 394 isn't that bad a receiver with the mods. Mine was an original "A"
version which I modified (see mod web pages previously listed) and it was rock
stable and very sensitive with a 50' wire antenna. The calibration was off
about 100 Hz in the USB mode but dead on in LSB. The only major drawback was
the selectivity in the SSB/CW mode which cannot be improved due to the strange
design of the tuning VFO. If you can find a 394 for $150 or less it's probably
worth it. Most of the bad reports were due to a few quality control "lemons"
that came from Tandy.

Well I did it, I bought a DX-200. I know some of you are cringing at that
but ya know, for my first "big" radio I have to say that I'm really happy
with it. I'm just starting out so I don't really know what I'm doing looking
for stations and stuff so I think this will be a good learning unit for me.
I figure later when I get more into it and learn more I'll upgrade to a nice
Kenwood. Now I can have the fun of designing and setting up an antenna and
trying to tie in my GRE Super Amp in and having some fun!

C-ya!

HI, Steve,
While I'd rather have a DX-302 than a DX-200, I hope you enjoy your DX-200.
If that's your first shortwave radio, you're starting out with a whole lot
more and even much more and better shortwave radio than was my first one, or
my second, one, or even my third one. And, unless you payed too much for
it, you might be able later to fetch at least as much if not more for it on
EBay than you payed for it, when you're ready for bigger, fancier, more
capable toys.

Anyway, do the most important thing, enjoy the hobby and have fun and learn
more about your world than you can in any other way short of actually going
there and spending a lot of carefully observant time there.
