Hi,

I just purchased a Yaesu FRG-7. I know nothing. I'm totally stupid and
I'm looking for advice. I live in a two story townhome and I'm
wondering what is the best antenna option for someone like me. I've
found several antennas on ebay. The man who sold me the radio
suggested a long wire. Also, what is an antenna tuner. Do I need one?

Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks,

Nancy

You don't need an antenna tuner.

Best antenna for you is probably a piece of wire about 75 feet long. Seems
there may be different antenna inputs on that radio for SW and M<W.

75 feet is fine, but I get more than adequate reception with my FRG-100 with a
simple run of wire that goes completely around the ceiling (at the walls) of a
very small room. I used to use an outdoor antenna, I haven't installed it
where I live now, and I got fine performance with a 20 foot section and a 40
foot section, either being selectable by a simple switch. The shorter one
seemed to be the one that I use most often.

Have fun, experiment, and don't be obsessed about elaborate antennas, if your
interest persists, you can experiment with larger and varying types later.

Regards.

Thanks. This should make things easier for me than I imagined. But, it
also raises another question. Do I have to run this wire in a straight
line? Could I zigzag it inside my attic?

thanks again,

Nancy, welcome to the wonderful world of hi-fi-quality shortwave. With the Frog
7's sensitivity, a simple random amount of wire is all you'll need. Pattern
design is your discretion. Also, add a 50 or 100 ohm resistor between your sw
and mw antenna clips, so one antenna will deliver medium and short waves. Your
preselector will be more than sufficient in "tuning" your antenna to received
frequency range. Are you in for a tonal treat, especially with Auntie Beebs'
and Radio Netherlands' musical fare. 73s from Sactown-n-Ed Gardner !!!
