In the next few days or so, I'm going to take the plunge and buy myself a
Sony ICF-SW77. Before I part with my hard-earned cash, can anyone tell me
what the SSB reception is like. I have heard several favourable comments re
its AM reception, but haven't heard much about how it performs on SSB.

Most of my listening will be to AM stations, but I do occasionally like to
listen to SSB. Is the narrow filter narrow enough for this mode and how easy
is the set to tune - is the tuning rate (kHz/rotation) about right ?

I just bought the Sony ICF-SW77 from the Sony centre here in Bristol.
I followed the interesting thread about the comparison between the Sony and
the Drake receivers.

It was mentioned that the second generation of the Sony ICF-SW77 was definitively an improvement over the first one. How can you tell which is which?

The manual that comes with it is dated 1991, which makes me think that the receiver should not be a second generation one.

I've heard an 11 segment antenna and a SER# > 30000 indicate a new
unit. My first 77 was "from the new batch" according to EEB, but it
shortly showed the memory eating bug. It had the 11 segment antenna
and a SER#>30000. My current one shows no memory eating problems, NAD
SOUNDS DIFFERENT THAN THE FIRST ONE. The first one was purchased
March, 1992, and returned 11 days later.

They didn't change the operation of the radio, so they didn't change
the book.

My old one showed a considerable loss of volume level when switched
into the synchro mode. The new one doesn't. Look for this.

I think SONY dropped some old guts into a new case for the first radio
I received.

I find the side band reception to be very good. The radio is stable, and
tuning is "fine" enough to receive good voice quality. Lastly, I have used
the radio for rtty / fax and it performed well. All with only the built in
whip antenna!

I saw one in a store with a serial number around 900,000. This is one
of the early 1993 sets. The one I got from Grove in late November 1993
has a serial number around 47,000. Strange numbering scheme.

Correct.

My SW77 shows a noticable *increase* in volume level when SYNC is
turned on.
