It's a long story, but my car's antenna, FM/AM radio, and
speakers are all in need of replacment.
So, I'd like to listen to shortwave on the drive to and from
work, and Philips has politely :-) brought out an auto shortwave,
FM&AM, and cassette player.
Can you tell me about it? Do you have one Have you heard one?
Passport to World Band Radio has a fluffy 'review' that doesn't say
too much. They do say that the car's ignition-noise can dampen weaker
signals; have you heard anything distant? Is it generally usable? Is
the FM&AM any good? Cassette?
Secondly, I'll need a new antenna. Is there a specific one to
look for for autos? How long, placment on the car, etc?
In particular, if there's anyone who's had good luck with
antenna installers in the Northern Virginia/DC/Southern Maryland area,
I would *REALLY* appreciate any news you could give me.
Thanks very much in advance,

I live in PA, and in the daytime I listen to the BBC, the Christian Science
Monitor, and Radio Moscow routinely while going to work, doing errands, etc
(Moscow has certainly been one to follow lately!). In the evening there's a
lot more: Deutsch Welle, Netherlands, Swiss Radio, Japan, China, etc.
Many of these use North American relays, but some are transatlantic, and they
come in quite well with a standard 30in/75cm auto antenna. Depending on
propagation, I can also get KOL Israel, UAE, Turkey, Greece, Sweden, Radio
France, Australia (9580 in the morning) etc.
If I have one problem with the radio, it's that I think they cut
corners to keep the price reasonable. On my unit the frequency display is
intermittant, and the radio forgets the current station setting when you turn
the car off - I have to retune each time. However, since I haven't heard too
many other people complain (both here and on Compuserve), it may just be that
I got a bad unit.
In any event I think its a good radio and, as they say in Passort, if you take
a good quality receiver and stick its whip antenna out the window while you
drive, that's about what you can expect.
>>>Chris--- I wish I could help you out, but I'm interested in getting
some of the same type of info! And since I live in the same general
area, I would be SO grateful if you would pass on whatever you find
out about the Philips 777 or any similar car SW, about the antenna,
and about area dealers/installers. ------ Keller
I too have been looking, and lusting, after the Philips DC777 for about a
year since seeing in the 1993 Passport. I just recieved the 1994 Passport
and in it, they say "If you want world band in your car, now is the time
to act" as they believe it may be discontinued.
Passport gives a phone number to call 1-800-544-0618, which is Philips
North America. I called today and can offer the following information:
They are not planning on discontinuing the DC777 but are
just clearing the shelves for the 1994 version of
the DC777. The person I spoke with said there was no
difference between the 1994 and the 1993 version.
The DC777 has sold quite well for them.
The current closeout price is $195 plus about $6 for shipping.
This price is $100 less than what EEB is currently selling
the radio for.
The CD/Shortwave radio Philips offered IS being discontinued and
they do not have anymore in stock.
Needless to say, I have ordered a radio and am eagerly awaiting its arrival
next week. So, the moral is, if you want one at a good price, now is the
time to get one.
Enjoy!

Some good news, bad news corrections are in order regarding my last

This is definately true and is now official, they are NOT discontinuing
the DC777.
: The DC777 has sold quite well for them.
Still true.

Unfortunately NOT true. Because they have decided to NOT discontinue
the unit, the price is now $279. However, this is still a good price.
Oh well, I guess we can't have it all :-)
