I would like to acquire a radio with AM sync detection. I'm not too
concerned with the size of the thing since it will primarily be my bed side
receiver. Could those who have used them give me some feedback concerning
the relative quality of the Sony 7600GR vs. the Grundig Satellite 800 or any
other receivers out there which have their own built in antennas? Due to
lack of room and too many antennas in the air already, I need something
which does not need much beyond its whip antenna or 20 to 25 feet of wire
laid along the floor and hung out the window.
Thanks much in advance for the help.

The package includes an
AC adapter, and an AN-LP2 active window antenna.
Great for a traveller.
JS> IMHO the radio with the best sync detector is the Sony 2010. The
combination of selectable sideband detector, two filters and 100hz
tuning accuracy makes for a high performance portable. They can be
found used on Ebay.
I would compare the 7600 to the Yacht Boy 400 and Sangean ATS909 and
not to the Satellit 800. The first three are of comparable size and
audio quality. The great sound quality and other features of the 800
comes at a much higher price and in a much larger package.
I used a 2010 with sync detector for about 6 years, and to be honest I
came away with mixed feelings about the real value of selectable
sideband sync detection. In many hours of listening I found only a few
situations where that feature could make a difference in audio quality,
but in no situation did it extract a listenable signal where none could
be gotten in AM mode. I found detuning slightly and switching filters
could do as well or better most of the time. Another issue is that the
sync detector on every radio I've tried seems to introduce it's own
noise level...it is usually a slight hiss, but it is there.
Take a look at the detailed reviews of those four receivers on
http://www.radiointel.com/reviews.htm
as well as the numerous and somewhat varied reviews on
http://www.eham.net/reviews/products/8
Of the three comparably sized portables I would probably give the nod
to the 7600 because I've used it's predecessors and found them to be
built with a lot of attention to detail and to receive AM and SSB very
well. I'm not a fan of push button tuning, but I could live with it.
A close second would be the Sangean mostly because of it's tuning knob.
The 2010 cheats a little by automatically turning off the synch
detection on weak signals, not that that isn't a good feature.
The other radio I know about synch detection on is the Drake R8B,
which is superb. I listen to AM all the time and it's always with
synch detection on, never with it off.
I didn't like the Satellit 800 when I had one for a few hours, owing
to its clunky size and large audio hum on the MW band from the power
supply that came with it; so didn't particularly pay attention to the
synch detection.

On the internet, nobody knows you're a jerk.
My brother has a Universal Satellit 800 and it is a fine radio,
particularly well suited to MW DX reception.

I doubt it. He does like to fuck people up however...

If that's another way of saying he likes to hurt people, I suppose he
does.

That certainly sounds like an excellent plan of action!

Afraid I don't know too much about the Satellit 800, however. When it
came out years back, I thought that it was to take the mantle of the
SW8, but I've read so many reviews on this product that seem to go one
extreme or the other, either lovin' it wholeheartedly or hatin' it
altogether, that, if you decide to go with the '800, you might consider
buying it on a basis whereby you can readily return it if it's not your
cup of tea. Also, the Eton E1 (what was earlier to be the Grundig
Satellit 900) is presumably to be released in June (this model is best
known for its annoying habit of repeatedly pushing its release date
farther and farther into the future).
http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/portable/0101.html Looks nice,
but I'd be hesitant to be one of the first buyers of this model, given
the experience of some of the early buyers of the Satellit 800
(presumably a lot of kinks in production of the '800; reportedly
quality control issues were remedied later; but a lot of
people...according to reports...got their hands on lemons).

I think Dave just showed his stupidity once again.

Looking for a phone number, pervert? Dates must be difficult for your type.
Cuhulin, being a notch above you on the evolutionary scale, had no such problems.
