Can you explain, again, why the SW8's SSB is causing you to sell it after only
owning it two weeks?

I used to own an R8 and it's more suitable for my uses. It's
not possible to tune in hams who are not right on frequency.
Yes, I am picky. PBT is VERY useful also.

The SW-2 is, IMO, a strangely underrated radio. The selectable sideband
synchronous detection is a huge advantage and solid as a rock. Great audio,
too.

I agree 100%. Too bad the front panel has that "Mattel" look. I've had a
couple of them and I'm definitely not parting with the 2nd one. The former
owner had the Kiwa filter mode installed and it did make a big difference on AM
(2 AM selectivity positions with the "wide" being noticably better than the
stock filter).

Not an AR7030 fan, I see. (I don't use the remote, MUCH,
really!)

REAL SWLers use real radios with real knobs!
None of these computer controlled toys with virtual existance!
(Digging a fox hole as fast as I can!)

Wouldn't you rather be spinning the dials than hammering these keys?
In principle, I agree with you though.
In article <20010801235830...@ng-co1.aol.com>, bartd...@aol.com
I have and occasionally use an RX320, and it's true that you can get an
outstanding
amount of receiver for your money by cutting out the knobs, controls, and
display
and replacing them with software, and there are advantages to linking to a
database.
BUT... sometimes it's a lot more satisfying to spin a big dial and just wander
aimlessly.
I like to have the option to do either.
The solution of course, is to buy a radio that has both a "real" interface and
a PC control
port -- then you can use it either way. And as I was tirading about in an
earlier post,
there's just no excuse for a modern receiver, which is controlled by a CPU and
firmware
anyways, not to have a simple PC interface connection and a little extra
firmware to
drive it from a PC, because it costs very little to add and yet makes the
receiver more flexible.
Actually, the same goes for home stereo gear. Get on it, manufacturers! :)

BTW I just tried doing THREE things (the radio, the computer and listening
to my wife tell me something) but I failed the test miserably. In the
doghouse again!!

Is that doghouse air-conditioned? <grin>
My dog's doghouse is the foot of my bed.
Well, actually, she steals the head of
the bed on top of the big fluffy pillows, but I kick
her off when I go to bed. If I get up in the middle of the night,
though, I risk losing my spot again. And then she gives me
this look like "what!? What am I doing wrong? Don't I look
cute hogging the whole bed?" :-)
