Can you explain, again, why the SW8's SSB is causing you to sell it after only
owning it two weeks?

Michael:
The SSB tuning on the Drake SW8 is in 50 Hz (100 Hz AM) increments. Many
consider this only adequate for SSB listening. Personally, I don't find it
to be a hindrance but others do.

You might miss the (newer version) SW8's superb sync detector, unless you
aquire an R8B. The R8 and R8A do not have a sideband selectable sync
detector. There is a HUGE difference.

I used to own an R8 and it's more suitable for my uses. It's
not possible to tune in hams who are not right on frequency.
Yes, I am picky. PBT is VERY useful also.

I hope this reply isn't a dupe. I tried to trade for an R8B
but no takers. I bought an R8A on Ebay today for $600 in
"like new" cond. Thanks for the info.

The sync detector in the SW-8 (and SW-2) is vastly superior to the detector in
the R-8 or R-8A. Only the R-8B is on par with the other two (selectable side
band). Neglecting the PB tuning, the 5 step selectivity and the notch filter I
definitely prefer the SW-2. The 50 Hz tuning is totally adequate for SSB in my
opinion.

The SW-2 is, IMO, a strangely underrated radio. The selectable sideband
synchronous detection is a huge advantage and solid as a rock. Great audio,
too.

I agree 100%. Too bad the front panel has that "Mattel" look. I've had a
couple of them and I'm definitely not parting with the 2nd one. The former
owner had the Kiwa filter mode installed and it did make a big difference on AM
(2 AM selectivity positions with the "wide" being noticably better than the
stock filter).

That is just the point. The SW8 comes with multiple bandwidths, whereas the
SW2 comes with one for AM. Michael.

I've owned the SW2 and the SW8.
The SW2 was a very nice receiver. I loved the remote control, the 100 memories
and the audio. The metal case on my SW2 seemed to get warm after extended use
but never seemed to effect performance.
When I bought my SW8, I was shocked at the size difference between the SW8 and
the SW2. The SW8 was much bigger and heavier. The construction of the SW8 is
much more rugged. As for the performance, the only noticable difference is the
ability to utilize the three bandwidths in harmony with the Synchronous
selectable sideband detector. I wish the SW8 had the remote control and the
extra 30 memory channels.

Amen on the remote. That's something that's bugged me.
Anyone know which SW receivers have remote control? I bought
a new SW2 from Universal for $400 right before they were
discontinued and I must say it was a very pleasant rig to
use. The Drake entry buttons are kind of annoying, but when
I remember band hopping with my Panasonic RF4900 I
appreciate direct entry.

Only ones that are masquerading as home stereos. Real SWLers don't use
remotes. (ducks)

Not an AR7030 fan, I see. (I don't use the remote, MUCH,
really!)

REAL SWLers use real radios with real knobs!
None of these computer controlled toys with virtual existance!

The 7030 is a top performing receiver - easily the equivalent of the R8B but
the look and interface
is............er..........um............well..........different? maybe it's
an aquired taste. <G>

Real Short Wave Listeners (SWLs)
spend most of their time SWLing instead of NGRing (news group reading) HA!

Wouldn't you rather be spinning the dials than hammering these keys?

I've discovered that I can operate my fingers and ears separately. This way I
can listen to the radio (using my computer speakers, I have a switch that
allows me to choose between the computer or the radio having use of the
speakers. I haven't listened to computer sounds in many months) and type on
the computer at the same time.

In principle, I agree with you though.

I have and occasionally use an RX320, and it's true that you can get an
outstanding
amount of receiver for your money by cutting out the knobs, controls, and
display
and replacing them with software, and there are advantages to linking to a
database.

BUT... sometimes it's a lot more satisfying to spin a big dial and just wander
aimlessly.
I like to have the option to do either.

The solution of course, is to buy a radio that has both a "real" interface and
a PC control
port -- then you can use it either way. And as I was tirading about in an
earlier post,
there's just no excuse for a modern receiver, which is controlled by a CPU and
firmware
anyways, not to have a simple PC interface connection and a little extra
firmware to
drive it from a PC, because it costs very little to add and yet makes the
receiver more flexible.

Actually, the same goes for home stereo gear. Get on it, manufacturers! :)

I'm doing both! RNZI is coming in on the Collins as I type this. <G>

BTW I just tried doing THREE things (the radio, the computer and listening
to my wife tell me something) but I failed the test miserably. In the
doghouse again!!

That's ok Brian. I hope you have a nice rig in the doghouse. My wife is a
school teacher and she loves to read. When I see her get her book out, I head
for the radio or computer. I'll be married 19 years this October and over the
years, I've become quite comfortable in my doghouse.

My dog's doghouse is the foot of my bed.
Well, actually, she steals the head of
the bed on top of the big fluffy pillows, but I kick
her off when I go to bed. If I get up in the middle of the night,
though, I risk losing my spot again. And then she gives me
this look like "what!? What am I doing wrong? Don't I look
cute hogging the whole bed?" :-)
