Mr. William J. Federer, a Missourian, is one of the most cheerful
people I have met. Despite this, Bill Federer’s writing always has a
serious message. His latest book is entitled Endangered Speeches. In
it, he traces the effort during the 20th Century to assure that
preachers were not involved in the political process. Federer points
out that prior to 1913 preachers never gave the Internal Revenue
Service or their 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status a thought because there
was no mechanism which applied to them. From 1913 until 1954, most
preachers simply ignored the IRS, as there was no reason for them to
be concerned.

In 1954, President Lyndon B. Johnson, running for re-election, heard
that a large group of Texas preachers would oppose him. So he hastily
had Congress enact a law which forbade churches from involvement in
politics. That was enough to silence preachers and LBJ was re-elected
comfortably.

One might think that LBJ would have been content to leave well enough
alone. However, when he found out that the American Enterprise
Institute (AEI) had assisted Senator Barry M. Goldwater’s candidacy he
scared William Broody, Sr. into political uselessness so that AEI
required years to recover.

Meanwhile, the IRS, which traditionally had been reluctant to
interfere with churches, this year cracked the whip so that most
pastors were afraid of losing their church’s loss of tax-exempt status
and thereby stayed out of the 2008 elections even though there were
moral issues on many state ballots.

Given the incoming presidential administration’s announced effort to
reinstate the so-called Fairness Doctrine, which some suggest should
be renamed the “Censorship Doctrine,” this attack upon churches is
frightening. Senator A. Mitchell (Mitch) McConnell, Jr. (R-KY) said he
immediately would file litigation contending that reinstatement of the
Fairness Doctrine constituted unconstitutional censorship and an
abridgement of our First Amendment rights. However, such a lawsuit
likely would take two years to work its way through the courts. There
is no question that our First Amendment is under assault. Read
Federer’s book to understand how American churches fit into the
political process. Then gear up for the fight on the re-christened
Censorship Doctrine and the Internet.

If the writer can't even get a date right, it gives one pause to wonder how
much else he got wrong. LBJ was running ELECTION, not re-election, in 1964,

The preachers can take off their uniform and set up a soapbox in any
public free-speech area and talk all they want, just as I can.
They can't do so in the position of a person in authority in / of

Actually, I was mistaken, and didn't finish the complaint. I noticed
that Oglivie and obamasuxdonkeydix had posted exactly the same thing,
one after another. When I searched their posting histories, I found
Oglivie was not a steaming racist, but donkeydix was. I looked up
their IPs, and got two different results. Unfortunately, I confused
Oglivie's with donkeydix' IPs. As I was filling out the complaint to
Human Resources at Lockheed, I went to paste in what I thought was
Oglivie's post, and found it was donkeydix' post. So I never finished
the complaint. Oglivie can hate Obama as much as he likes, and that is
fine. I suspect there are a lot of others who work for Lockheed who
hate Obama.

However, I see nothing wrong with getting a racist asshole like
obamasuxdonkeydix fired. If there is some ancient Usenet prohibition
against giving someone up based on their views, well so what? I don't
care. I'm an amoral troll, remember?

Shortwave radio enthusiasts have a right to enjoy a newsgroup
which was established for them and is supposed to be dedicated to
shortwave radio information.

And they have a right to do so without wading through all the off

obnoxious morons like you out, also many don't have the capability to
do so.

Start behaving like a responsible adult and filter yourself by posting

Absolutely. NO church has any right to tax exempt status once they become
involved in the political arena. Right or wrong, the LDS church nearly lost
their tax exempt status under Carter because they wouldn't allow blacks into
the priesthood. I'm rather torn on that one, because I believe in equality,
but also believe the government has no place getting involved in the
business of the church (any church) just as the church has no business
getting involved in the government.

Liberal Fascist and Neo-Communist Soros organizations?

Fascism is characterized as: "a political philosophy, movement,
or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and
often race above the individual and that stands for a
centralized autocratic government headed by a
dictatorial leader, severe economic and social
regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition."

How does that get melded with liberalism, now?

Neo-Communist Soros organizations must be those
"new communists" who are funded by George Soros?

Sorry, but you certainly are amusing.

I disagree. There are always points to debate, and I love to argue.
Just because I think I am right does not mean I won't engage in honest
debate. That is what makes it so much fun.

You sound like you need some help. And some education.
Your projections (and assumptions) are very wild, and
not related to actual fact.

You seem to believe that certain religions (e.g. those
"conservative" ones (?) are being persecuted. How is that?

It seems to be related to the idea that if you speak
out against modern "conservatism", you are speaking
out against GOD.

Yet I wonder how God endorses all the work of the GOP,
with the fine example of the George W. Bush administration?
Would God be endorsing a war for oil, and all the death
and suffering it caused? Would God have endorsed torture
and ignoring the Geneva Convenstion, and flushing of habeus
corpus?

Personally, I wonder how God feels about the Mormons now
and their major investments on promoting Prop. 8 in California.

I may misunderstand what God is telling people to do nowadays.

Nope, none of MY business, but it IS his/her employer's business. Whether
after, during or before work hours, they are using the employer's resources,
and everything they post or do on the internet can reflect upon that
employer. Almost no employer likes having their employees use employer
resources for their own purposes. A great many have rules against it that
indicate the employee may be fired for so doing.

And if his/her employer wants to find out...they can. (And some do go over
internet logs.) But's the employers decision..and their right to do so.

But for someone to get involved between an employer and his employee simply
because they got their feeling hurt or couldn't stand the heat in a
newsgroup.....is dispicable.

Mormon teaching runs counter to Scripture.

In other words, it matters little what they claim, they take stands
which place them outside the umbrella of Christianity. This is a
doctrinal issue, and one which you probably know little about.

Don't forget most of the Founders were strong skeptics. Read "The Age
of Reason" by Thomas Paine, the inventor of the United States of
America. He was an extremely gifted thinker, and could express himself
in very plain language. Hell Roy, even you may be able to grasp these
beautiful words:
