The 700's batteries are easily shaken loose and the time is lost and the
display is reset. There is an accumulator/batteries switch on the inside to
use depending on what batteries are inside. The switch broke after a few
months. The tuning has always been 300 kHz off. I don't think that 41
memories are enough.
The audio quality is great. But is this enough?
As for the display being off--I'm guessing you mean 300 cycles off. In
other words, you're listening to 12359 khz. USB--marine simplex
frequency--and you have to tune to 12358.7 or 12359.3 to get the voices to
sound right--am I right on this? 300 khz is WAY off frequency.
There is a fix for this, pretty simple, and if you know what "zero-beat"
means and feel confident poking a little screwdriver through a hole in the
case I'll give you directions--I posted them to the group a couple of weeks
ago to other Sat700 owners with the same problem and they were able to
correct it. Mine was off by about 200 cycles when I got it and figured out
that it was easy to correct. Again, let me know if you'd like to try to
correct the problem--it's not that hard.

There is a modification to the sync on the Sat 500 that
dramatically improves its performance. Its not for the faint of
heart, but it is doable by the average person with a bit of
experience.
And you're right the Sat 500 is the superior radio of the three:
Sat 700, Sat 500 and 2010.
About two years ago I had to ship it off to get repaired. It went dead. I
sent it to Universal Radio(?)--I can't think right now. They did a good job
and it's still working.
When my cat was a kitten she chewed through the power cord. It is spliced.
It was plugged in at the time. I don't know if it shocked her but she quit
chewing on things for a few days
The radio is besides my bed now but in the past it was no show piece. It
went everywhere--a lot of camping. It has held-up nicely, considering.
But I probably would like to try the 2010. In the past few issues of
Passport the 700 (nor the Kenwood R-5000--my other radio) has been listed. I
guess that they are has-beens.
!
You're right--earlier post--about 41 memories not being enough. The 700
spoils you, doesn't it? I expanded mine with the extra memory chips,
bringing it up to 2,048 memories--I save EVERYTHING!
Of course, my new-ish RX-320 has even more memory capability than that, but
it's not exactly portable, being tied to the computer all the time. Nice
radio, though, and pretty cheap at $300....

The NEW Satellit 800 will have SUPERIOR sound, SUPERIOR bandwidths, and
a SUPERIOR sync detector. And the price is not much more than you would
spend for a used Satellit 700.

Stoy,
Sony ICF2010 lists used for US$220-230, and the Grundig Satellit 700 listed at
230-250.
Essentially the same price range. These prices accd. to Fred Ostermans's pocket
book, "Buying a Used Shortwave Receiver", 4th edition , copyright 1998.
Great Book, availaable on the "Universal Radio " website.
E bay prices have been higher lately for these as you expect.
Let me know if you find a nice deal, as I am considering the Grundig 700
myself, but want to see one up close for its "look and feel" .

The 700? You might try CC Radio. That's where I got my memory chips.

When indeed. I got the first notice that the YB 500 was coming
out, 2 years before it was available, 1 1/2 years after I put in my
order. Willoughby and Ward in formed me that my order was to be
cancelled a couple of months after placed it, but that I would be
notified when units were available for shipment to reactivate my
order.
When I ordered that horrid 960 Classic, the order was cancelled
and reactivated twice before I was informed the radio was to be
shipped, and even then it took a couple of months.
Lextronix may be behind on fulfilling orders, and production
numbers have yet to be released. I don't doubt that the radio is
being produced, but I also don't doubt that the supply lines are far
from reliable, with their Chinese partners.
Don't be surprised if the radio ships in limited quantities for at
least the next year. More likely, two.
Ahhhhh but WHEN, that is the question. I really don't think you'll ever see
that radio in production. I think Grundig put that picture out to judge public
opinion to see if they should make or sell the radio. Has anyone including
reviewers actually seen and worked this new rig? I also think Drake might be
having second thoughts about selling such a radio in the US. After the
promises Grundig made before on the Sat 700 replacement I really don't trust
them.

Not to mention superior SIZE.

If they did, in fact, float the balloon to see what publoic reaction would be,
it would seem they'd conclude it's positive. We've talked about it a lot here,
in largely positive terms, and many newcomers I've met have, on their own,
concluded that the 800 would be a good rig for them.
I'll be sending my money to Universal as soon as it is released, and I have a
chance to see what people think about it.
