Well, Robert I have several questions. Why is this technology being
implemented at all? IBOC does not use enough bandwidth to have better
sound than analog and the technology as implemented has very poor
reliability or service not to mention the interference issues with
other stations be it an analog or digital broadcast. This poor service
and lack of significant improvement over analog will eventually kill
IBOC because who in their right mind is going to buy a new radio that
supports this problematic scheme? Seems to me that all the current
problems were easily forecasted so why was it implemented to begin
with?
1. Poor audio quality due to the use of digital compression in a bid to
overcome the limited bandwidth.
2. Poor service again due to the limited bandwidth.
3. Interference issues daytime and nighttime.
4. The cost to broadcasters of upgrading their transmitters and antenna
systems and the cost to listeners that have to purchase new radios that
as portables will generate more heat and have shorter battery life.
5. Phase related reception problems with mobile receivers that will
never be overcome.
It's all bad.

HD Radio may become popular when it's sold in bins at remainder
stores;
- Possibly good for parts, Cabinets for speakers,
spare electronics,
etc.

- Nearly 100% of AM HD stations have commercials.
- And since the OP seemed to be referring primarily to AM HD...
BAD,
Nearly Yes -but- Technically Not 100% since there are
the National Public Radio (NPR) Station and the so-called
Public Radio Stations -aka- Non-Commercial Radio
Stations as a 'group' and they are as a group part of the
Early Adapters of IBOC and FM "HD" Radio with the
speciffic intent to be HD-2 Second Audio Channel
Broardcasters to better serve 'their' Listeners.
http://www.kpbs.org/radio/myrland_digital_radio
* NPR Radio Station List
http://www.npr.org/stations/pdf/nprstations.pdf
Point-of-Fact - KOAL-AM 550 kHz in Portland, Oregon
is a "Commercial Free" National Public Radio Station.
Here are a few more "Commercial Free" National
Public Radio Stations (NPR) on the AM Radio Band
From the NPR Radio Station List
http://www.npr.org/stations/pdf/nprstations.pdf
* WILL-AM 580 kHz from the UOI in Urbana, IL
* WNYC-AM 820 kHz New York Public Radio
* WNED-AM 970 kHz in Buffalo NY
* WGVU-AM 850 kHz in Muskegon, MI
* WOUB-AM 1340 kHz in Athens, OH
* WXXI-AM 1370 kHz in Rochester, NY
* WSUI-AM 910 kHz in Iowa City, IA
* KOPT-AM 1600 kHz in Eugene, OR
Note - The State of Alaska has 8 NPR AM Radio Stations.
Remember the Primary Intent of IBOC and "HD" Radio
is it use and application in the FM Radio Band; and
Public Radio Stations are a major broadcaster on the
FM Radio Band.
-but- Even on a Non-Commercial Public Radio Station
you will still hear about there 'corporate underwriters'.

"Unfortunately, Ibiquity does not: Yes, they have gotten many radio
stations to make the $100,000 or so investment required to add HD
Radio broadcasting, but what the leave out of their PR spin is that
MANY of these stations were Public Radio/NPR stations that had their
equipment paid for by special funding from Congress. So tell me,
senior executives from, say, Sony, Mitsubishi, Best Buy, etc.: How do
you feel about Ibiquity''s lobbyists getting US taxpayers to pick up
the tab for many of their transmitter sales? Wouldn''t it be great if
your lobbyists could get Congress to mandate that US taxpayers be
required to buy your products, too? Do you even slightly care?
Ibiquity will take their money and run, and HD Radio will join a long
list of failed formats, like Dolby FM radio, Elcassete, mini disk (in
the US), etc."
"HD Radio: Fun with Math"
"I think it is fair to say that the audiophile community, those people
who take their FM seriously, is dead set AGAINST HDRadio. Not only do
most people never intend to buy a radio, unless as a plaything for
early adopters and collectors, but are aghast at the FCC for even
allowing IBOC to thrash up the FM bandwidth. Plus, people with enough
technical savvy to read the specs are insulted by the false claims of
'CD sound quality' or even 'near-CD sound quality'. These are
transparent marketing hype, beyond mean puffery. Sorry, but HDRadio
has sworn enemies. This goes beyond just business but has political
reprecussions for FCC and for Congress. This has the whiff of
political scandal - and I'm a rock-ribbed Republican! The Corporation
for Public Broadcasting is especially vulnerable. My advice for any
businessman is to avoid any association with HDRadio."
http://www.hear2.com/2006/06/hd_radio_fun_wi.html
Most of my HD conversions were done by NPR stations, who rippped off
Congress - I am really worried about Senator Dingell's investigation
of that crook Kevin Martin. Martin promised to keep his mouth shut,
after we paid him off.
No, I think everyone sees you for the nincompoop you are...
OK Ron, the thread is about AM. It is written several times above so I
don't know how you can miss it.
Now if you want to talk about FM HD it is no different from analog FM.
It has the same commercials and the same programming. These days even
public radio has commercials along with their beg-a-thons.
And your sentence is a non sequitur. Maybe you can further explain that
logic so I can understand it.

Maybe there's hope for this newsgroup after all!
I'm glad you keep youself entertained.

I'm very aware of public broadcasting stations on the AM band. Portland
proper has one: KBPS 1450.
I don't know where you got your information. KOAL is in Price, Utah, and on
750 KHz, and is a commercial talker.
The only 550 in Oregon is indeed a part of the OEPBS network, but is not in
Portland, and cannot even be heard easily in Portland. It is located in
Corvallis, home of Oregon State University, which is between Salem and
Eugene.
1600 in Eugene IS now a part of OEPBS, but it's call is KOPB, not KOPT.
This station used to be a commercial station, back when I used to do a lot
of DX from the Portland area. At the time it was called KASH. That call
has since moved to an FM in Alaska.
On a related trivia note, a one time commercial TV station in Salem, then
KVDO, on Channel 3 was purchased by OEPBS and moved to Bend, OR, and given
the call KOAB-TV.
The Sony had a noisy power supply so I sent it back-- replacement/
repair is on the way. The Sangean receiver has been flawless. I
really like the extra content on HD radio. Almost sounds like the
jocks are programming the extra HD feeds for now, which is a blast.
Tom-K in L.A.,
You are a Shinning Example of a Satisfied Free Over-the-Air
Audio Consumer : Who makes-up the Two-Sigma segment
of the US Population that the 'concept' of IBOC and HD Radio
was sold-on to the FCC.
Two-Sigma -aka- The Vast Majority {~95%} - With the full
understanding that some Radio Listeners will Not Be Served.
Basically the same 'criteria' that present day Analog Radio
Listeners have had to deal with : You can't hear everything
and you can't always hear what you want :
So Hear What You Can - When You Can :
Can It All . . . It's Only Radio !
Whether 'we' here as AM/MW Radio DXers like it or not :
In the long run HD-Radio will serve the American Audio
Consumer : Who is a regular Listener of Free Over-the-Air
AM & FM Radio.
HD-Radio will meet the 'needs' of the "Vast Majority" of
the American Audio Consumers : Who Choose HD-Radio.
You also point out one of HD-Radio major problems :
quality e-q-u-i-p-m-e-n-t .
The 'other' on going problem is the HD-Radio Signal Delivery.
The 1% Solution Ain't No Solution At All : with a Bump to
4% the First in a Series of Digital Power 'adjustments' over
several Years { ~ Decade} toward the Full Transition to
All Digital AM & FM HD-Radio with the end of all Analog
AM & FM Radio Broadcasting.
The FCC 'claims' that they will let the Market Place "Decide"
* The Fact-Is that the Market Place is the Radio Broadcasters
and Their Advertisers : Not the Radio {Consuming} Listeners.
* Presently Analog Radio is Paying the Bills and HD {Digital}
Radio -is- a "Cost".
* In the Future there will come a "Time" when HD {Digital}
Radio is Paying the Bills and Analog Radio -is- a "Cost".
* When That "Time" Comes : The Radio Broadcasters and
Their Advertisers will 'petition' the FCC to drop the imposed
Cost of continued Analog Radio Broadcasting and the FCC
will readily agree : Since by doing so the FCC would itself
eliminate an Administrative Function and achieve a Cost
Saving for the Government.
< SNIP >
And you are a shining example of a news group retard.

Well, I haven't been expecting much from you.
I was hoping that not everyone has to either agree with Telemon....or be
subjected to name calling.
Sounds good! Reality is always a good thing....
Non-Comm's are forbidden from having commercials...that's why they have
underwriter announcements.
And this is an example of an on-topic post?

Well, you'll never know, becuase you crap over anyone who disagrees with

Not to mention calling people very non-pc names.....
Check with a lawyer....there is.
Again, you set yourself up to be the arbiter of others....thats what makesz
newsgroups disintegrate.
Looks like you spend too much time name-calling....and not enough time on

That's no true. An opinion based if fact can differ from mine and I
would think nothing wrong with it. The news group retard comes along
with BS every day. He can't back it up the statements of fact he makes
or his conjecture based on misunderstandings. Doesn't matter how many
time you point it out to him tomorrow he reposts the same crap.
Go ahead and find out for yourself.

What do you call "retard" and "moron"?
If you ever had a retarded family member, you would know this is an
offensive name.

There is no law against being dumb.
I think the same can be said for you. Name calling over and over again.
Part of using usenet is the 'ignore' feature. You read what you want to
read and ignore the rest.
Most news readers have 'twit' filters.

Sorry bud, a private corporation pays and gets mentioned as supporting
the program. You think that's done for altruistic reasons? If it was
their name and what they do or manufacture would not be mentioned. They
want to be thought well of so you will buy the product or service. This
is very transparent and if you don't see it I don't hold much hope for
you. I don't care about the legalese.

That only works if everyone else does that. Let's say someone subscribes
to the news group and asks a question. You answer it giving some good
advice and Retard post some of his bull crap. Now what is the OP going
to believe you or Retard?
Well you have to correct the news group retard or the OP gets bad
advice. How many times do you think you will have to do that? The answer
is every time.
So go for it Ron.

Well, the truth always wins out.
> Well you have to correct the news group retard or the OP gets bad

Like most things on the internet, it's the resp of the user to distinguish
bad information from good information.
WRT medical information, there is a lot of good stuff...there are a lot of
quack stuff too.
People who use the internet have to be able to distinguish sources.
I would assume if you know more...and are a better authority on the subject,
your information will win out.
> How many times do you think you will have to do that? The answer
> is every time.
Nope...once or twice, then you have to let your information stand for
itself.
Hardly..... ;-)
And you don't think using words like 'moron' and 'retard' don't drive people
off?
Non coms can have "commercials" but there are restrictions on them, such as
no "call for action" and no price-item type ads. However, a commercial can
describe the merits of a business or product. An example would be Mercedes
can describe the design and careful attention to detail and safety and the
power of its engines, but not the $399 a month lease terms for well
qualified customers. It's an ad, but with restrictions.... very significant
restrictions.
As was said, check with a lawyer... any communications attorney can tell you
the differences between ads on a commercial and non commercial station.

Check with a listener; a commercial's a commercial.
The NCEFM is less likely to talk about gun crime when the Olin
Foundation is writing the checks.

I'm a retard and I'm still here.

There certainly are commercials, but the content is severely limited.
From today's Inside Radio, a news item that defines to some extent what can
and can't be in a non-com's "underwriting" announcements which are simply
commercials without the hype.
Non-commercial station fined for plugging sponsors' products. Contemporary
Christian "92.7 The River" WCVZ, South Zanesville, OH is being hit with a
$9,000 FCC fine for broadcasting prohibited underwriting announcements in
2003. The case involves underwriters Tastee Freeze and Prindle-GMAC Real
Estate. In the Tastee Freeze instance, WCVZ asked listeners whether they are
"planning a special occasion" - a move the FCC says "might require use of
the underwriter's products." Owner Christian Voice of Central Ohio argues
the comments are acceptable because they don't contain price information or
calls to action. But WCVZ is fined because the FCC says announcements that
feature "comparative or qualitative descriptions, price information, calls
to action, or inducements to buy, sell, rent or lease" are prohibited. The
station has since converted to a commercial operation.
Not true. KPFK is protected only to the extent of a conforming B contour,
which ends in deep Orange County. No LA FM is protected into San Diego
County. XHLNC is a legal operation.
Second, XHLNC (there is no XLNC) is moving to another frequency.

Sorry that was a typo....should've been "can't" have commercials.
(One typo can change the whole meaning of a sentence....)
Absolutely not....
But it's like someone getting their name listed as a donor at a museum.
But it's more a question of what you call it. Semantics.
As Eduardo pointed out, there are things that can make a difference as
defined by law.
