Help programming Kaito 1102 preset stations

Hi all, newbie here. I have Googled, I have emailed several experts,
even the vendor from whom I bought my Kaito 1102 and no one's been
able to answer my question:

I'm trying to program preset stations in my kaito 1102 I bought a
month ago. I can't make the frequencies "stick" to the memory. I pick
the page I want, I tune into a frequence, I hit M/Lock and while that
M is still flashing I select the number that I want it to be and then
M stops flashing.

But the station isn't in memory! What am I doing wrong? Am I missing a
step here that puts it in some mode to receive programmed stations or
is there some other button in the sequence I am omitting? The
instructions are, well, poorly translated I guess :)
