I picked up a new Radioshack DX-399 over the weekend. These are on
clearance, marked down to $39.97 from $150. Overall I've been very
pleased with it, and quite surprised at this little radio's
performance, considering its cheap price. It's small and light, comes
with a carrying pouch, and includes an AC adapter. For under $40 you
are getting a dual conversion radio with 1 kHz tuning from 153 Khz -
29.999 Mhz. This is the same radio as the Sangean ATS-606, and seems
like the perfect travel companion. For the price, I don't think it can
be beat. Radioshack part number is 20-229. For better performance just
hook up a 20 feet wire to its external antenna connection (Radioshack
278-1374 is a good choice).

Also worth noting the DX-396 is also marked down to $39.97 and is
another nice little shortwave set. The DX-396 is single conversion,
digital PLL, runs on 2 C batteries for a _long_ time. Mine comes
close to the sensitivity of my Sony ICF-2010 when both use their
whip antennas.

I too recently picked up the DX-399 and agree with everything you've said.
I was most impressed with how favorably it compares with my 7600GR - off the
whip and with the AN-LP1. And it is actually easier to listen to on FM than
the Sony. Can't be beat at the price!

A question - does the low battery indicator on your 399 work as it's
supposed to? The manual says the indicator should flash when the battery
strength is 3 or lower. I've had 2 units now and I didn't get the flashing
warning with either of them. The strength indicator fell to the point where
the 1 didn't register and eventually the radio cuts out with 'E' and the
indicator flashing showing that the batteries were shot. But no warning
before then.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

I use mine with the AC adapter most of the time, so I haven't had a
chance yet to run down the batteries. I'm going to get a set of
rechargeables soon ...

Can you please comment a little more on the DX-399 vs. the Sony 7600GR
(in terms of performance)? I had been looking at getting the 7600GR
too, but after this really cheap DX-399, I now wonder if I really need
the Sony (for SSB I have other radios to play with, so that is not a
selling point for me on the Sony).

Thanks!

Hiya Ali,

I've only done informal reception comparisons between the 399 and the
7600GR - mostly on the major SW broadcasters, which frequently are difficult
to receive in my generally poor reception area. Even with difficult
signals, so far everything I could make out on the Sony was intelligible on
the 399, using both with the built-in antennas. And the AN-LP1 seems to
provide the same improvement for both units. Remember though, this is the
result of casual 'testing' by a non-techie SW listener.

I generally prefer the audio of the 7600GR; its larger speaker provides a
fuller sound and its tonal balance is tilted toward the high end which helps
with muddy AM signals. However, it is annoying to listen to FM music for
any length of time on the Sony (though AM music sounds just fine to my
ears). Since I've had the 399 on my desk, I've been able to keep it tuned
to my favorite FM stations for extended periods without having the urge to
turn the thing off that I get with the 7600GR. It ain't hi fi audio but it
doesn't grate on me the way the Sony does.

I think the biggest advantage of the 7600GR is its synch detector. It's a
definite help in cleaning up poor signals at home and in reducing adjacent
channel interference when I've taken it travelling to good reception areas
on the east coast of the US. Also, the Sony feels like a more rugged radio
that could take more abuse than the 399, though I have no complaints about
the build quality of the 399.

Other than these factors, the Sony has more memories organized conveniently
in a 'page' format and a very nice clock setup which allows changing time
zones without resetting the time - and a button for switching daylight
savings time on and off.

That's about all I can come up with at the moment. Feel free to ask any
other specific questions that might occur to you. I love both radios!

Best,
Joe

The message http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DX398/message/3170 at the
Yahoo! DX-398 group list reports:

>>
Approx 25 DX-396s in the Tucson [AZ] area Rat Shacks. Contact Rodney
Williams at 520-745-6440. He said he would ship the units. $39.97 +
shipping. DX-398s are apparently all gone here.

Givn the age of this post, I will be pleasantly surprised for a reply. I have the RS DX-399 but the speaker is most likely blown out (very scratchy... sounds good thru earphones). Anyone have any idea how to get to the speaker? Thanks.

Then why did you reply to a 2002 post?

If you actualy have a question, don't go looking for an ancient thread to
reply to, start a new one. Just because google hasnt' fixed the bug that
allows replies to posts older than 30 days doesn't mean every idiot should
be replying to old posts. Use some common sense.
