Anyone using either of these AM Loop Antennas ?

How do they perform ?

Using this antenna - 3 ft version:

http://www.angelfire.com/mb/amandx/loop.html

12 turns #12 spaced .4 in. center to center apart w pickup loop 2 in.
from main loop. Will not overload my SDR. Tunes approx. 380 kHz to 2.1
MHz - top freq. depending on how much coax you feed it with. I used #
12 because I already had 2000 ft. Cost about 15 bucks for wood and
capacitor.

If you buy an amplified loop make sure it has a gain adjustment or it
will probably overload the radio.

Give me a 10 foot chunk of copper tubing, a variable capacitor, some
wire and a plastic junction box and I can make one a heck of a lot
cheaper than $329.99 ...

Here's a decent looking kit version of this type of loop:

The expensive pixel loop is "shielded", don't forget. You are going to
have to shield the turns and stop local electrical field noise pickup,
hence, the length of copper tubing I mentioned ... aluminum could work ...

If you want a VERY close to exact copy ... somehow, I think most have
missed that.

50 Foot Coil 1/4" O.D. Copper Tubing

Actually, you would form an ~10 foot chunk of copper tubing into a ~3 ft
loop. Then you would thread many turns of insulated copper wire though
the tubing, sufficient to resonate across the AM band with a variable
cap. The ends of the copper tube would be insulated from each other,
that would be the purpose of the plastic junction box, which the two
ends of the tubing would be attached to.

This would give you the shielding for e-field shielding for the loop ...
years ago I built one, but a six foot diameter, when I was in my teens.
It hung on either a north or south wall, or a east or west wall, as
was appropriate for direction I wished to search for stations in. It
worked quite well.

Now a days, with MMIC GaAs devices, a low noise preamp would be very
simple to use as a preamp and very low noise. Something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/MSA-0486-Silicon-Bipolar-MMIC-Amplifier-LOT-20-/220694429261?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item336269be4d
Good to 3.2GHz.

Are you trying to build a Wellbrook Loop? I don't doubt they are
patented.

You only need to worry about a patent if you were selling them. Anyway,
such a simple idea as a shielded loop probably was never patented. If
it was, that patent must have expired long, long ago ... only now-a-days
do they allow patents to run forever.

Sounds right. And, like I said, with a MMIC device, the performance of
that amp can easily be matched, and I would expect, exceeded --
depending on the device chosen the filters used, etc.

The box loop I built does exceptionally well at rejecting local
interference. That's the main reason I have not torn it apart or
bought something better.

Some where I remember seeing a Loop Antenna
make out of a Hula-Hoop with the Wires inside it.

Then the builder took Aluminum Foil Tape and
Ran it around the OD and then pressed it down
onto and around the surface of Hula-Hoop.

Claim that it worked better with the Grounded
Foil Cover. I always though that the Foil Tape
should have been Spiral Overlapped Wrapped
around the Hoop.
