I'm a longtime SW listener and have had mid-priced portable receivers
(SONY ICF 5900W, Sangean ATS 818, and Sangean ATS 909). I currently
listen to Intl. broadcasters, some utility, and MW DX'ing. I'm looking
for greater performance, selectivily, etc..

I've read the reviews and am about to pony up the bucks to buy one of
these receivers (Drake R8B or JRC NRD-535). I would like to hear from
some current owners on their experiences and on which receiver they
think is better. On the other hand, perhaps there is a receiver I have
overlooked, general comments sought.

Many thanks,
Gregory Mosher

You may wish to delay decision until NRD's new digital receiver is
released to the public.

IMHO, the Drake has better performance, but the '535 is easier to use
(not an insignificant consideration when you're talking about hours of
listening). For my money, neither one has an internal speaker worth
listening to, but if compared using the same "generic" external
speaker, I found the Drake to have better sound.
Your choice, ergonomics or SLIGHTLY better performance.

In your consideration of which receiver to purchase, as you compare, may I
suggest you use the NRD-535D unit instead of the NRD-535? The
modifications of the 535D made a significant difference in the quality of
that JRC receiver model.
